Chapter 12 - The Child Whose Sample He Used
The name on the hospital label belonged to Sophie Lane.
Daniel didn’t recognize it.
Maya did.
Her face went cold.
“Sophie was Rocky’s neighbor’s granddaughter.”
Daniel looked at her.
“How do you know that?”
“She came to Emma’s first birthday party.”
Sophie was almost the same age as Emma.
Same pediatric hospital.
Same week of testing.
Samuel asked the police not to contact the family until they confirmed the records.
By Monday morning, they had.
Sophie had undergone routine blood work the exact day Evelyn photographed Rocky carrying the specimen bag.
Rocky had been a hospital foundation donor.
He had access to areas ordinary visitors did not.
The theory was suddenly horrifyingly simple.
He obtained or copied a sample identifier.
Used Sophie’s specimen in a private paternity comparison against Daniel.
The result naturally excluded Daniel.
Then Rocky created a forged Westfield report using the laboratory’s branding.
Daniel stared at the evidence.
“All so Mom’s trust could be challenged.”
Samuel nodded.
“If Emma could be portrayed as unrelated to you, Rocky could argue the biological-grandchild provision failed.”
Maya whispered, “And if Daniel divorced me because of it…”
“Rocky would have had even more leverage.”
Daniel walked away.
Maya followed this time.
He stood alone in the hallway.
“I almost let him do it.”
“But you didn’t.”
“I questioned you.”
“You were manipulated.”
“I still questioned you.”
Maya touched his arm.
“What matters now is what you do after learning the truth.”
Daniel looked toward Emma’s bedroom.
“I’m going to spend the rest of my life making sure she never thinks she has to prove she belongs to me.”
That afternoon, police arrested Rocky.
Not for the full financial case yet.
For violating the return restriction, assault-related allegations, evidence tampering concerns, and witness intimidation evidence supplied by Linda.
News spread quickly through Carter Holdings.
Rocky’s allies began calling.
Then resigning.
Then hiring lawyers.
Within forty-eight hours, three former employees offered investigators documents.
One of them produced something Samuel had been searching for:
The original corporate ledger.
It showed more than eleven million dollars diverted over nine years.
Rocky had blamed losses on bad investments.
They weren’t bad investments.
They were theft.
But his lawyer still fought.
He claimed Evelyn’s recordings were manipulated.
He claimed Linda wanted money.
He claimed Maya staged her injury.
And he claimed Emma had been coached.
That final accusation changed Daniel.
Until then, he had been angry.
Now he became focused.
“No more protecting the Carter name.”
Samuel looked at him.
“What do you want to do?”
Daniel answered:
“Everything legally possible.”
Then Maya’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A woman whispered:
“I worked for Rocky.”
Maya straightened.
