Chapter 13 - The Woman Who Forged the Report

Her name was Allison Price.
Five years earlier, she had been an administrative assistant at a small private medical billing company.
Rocky paid her ten thousand dollars in cash.
Her job sounded simple.
Take the layout of a legitimate laboratory report.
Change the patient information.
Insert the paternity exclusion from another test.
Print it.
Mail it anonymously.
“I knew it was wrong,” Allison said during the recorded interview.
Maya sat beside Samuel.
Daniel sat across from her.
“Why agree?”
“My husband had just been laid off. We were losing our house.”
She looked ashamed.
“That doesn’t excuse it.”
“No,” Maya said. “It doesn’t.”
Allison nodded.
“I’ve thought about that little girl for five years.”
Then she placed an old laptop on the table.
“I kept everything.”
Rocky had emailed her from an encrypted address.
But attached documents contained metadata.
Author:
R. Carter.
There were payment notes.
Instructions.
Even revisions.
MAKE THE EXCLUSION LINE LARGER.
DO NOT USE EMMA’S REAL SAMPLE NUMBER.
MAIL TO DANIEL ONLY.
Maya felt physically sick.
One message was worse.
IF HE LEAVES HER, WE WON’T NEED PHASE TWO.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“What was phase two?”
Allison shook her head.
“I never knew.”
Investigators searched Rocky’s old financial files.
They found the answer.
Phase Two was a petition prepared—but never filed—challenging Emma’s rights under Evelyn’s trust.
Rocky had expected Daniel to divorce Maya.
Then he planned to use the forged DNA report to argue Emma was not a qualifying heir.
When Daniel stayed, Rocky couldn’t execute the plan cleanly.
So he waited.
Five years.
Kept undermining Maya.
Kept treating Emma as an outsider.
Kept searching for Evelyn’s hidden originals.
And when Daniel left on his recent business trip, Rocky realized he had a final opportunity.
He froze Maya’s access.
Removed employees loyal to her.
Tried to recover the hidden documents.
Scheduled the two-million-dollar transfer.
And attempted to psychologically break Maya before Daniel returned.
But he made one mistake.
He underestimated a hungry five-year-old.
Emma had wandered into the dining room and asked for food.
Rocky’s cruelty created the scene that finally forced every secret into daylight.
Samuel looked at Maya after Allison left.
“You understand how important this is?”
Maya nodded.
The case no longer depended on one recording.
They had independent witnesses.
Digital evidence.
Financial records.
The DNA archive.
Evelyn’s files.
Linda’s testimony.
Allison’s confession.
And Rocky’s own conduct.
Still, Maya didn’t feel victorious.
Not yet.
Emma had started hiding snacks under her pillow.
That night Maya found three crackers wrapped in a tissue.
“Sweetheart, why are these here?”
Emma looked embarrassed.
“In case Grandpa comes back and says food isn’t for me.”
Maya’s heart broke.
She sat beside her.
“He is not coming back into this house.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
Emma thought for a moment.
Then asked:
“Am I really Daddy’s?”
Maya pulled her close.
“You are his daughter.”
Emma whispered:
“And his family?”
Daniel was standing in the doorway.
May you like
He heard everything.
And this time, he had the answer Emma needed.
