Chapter 9 - The Account in Maya’s Name

The police photographed Maya’s injury.
They photographed the broken plate.
The collapsed dining table.
The dog bowl.
And, after Emma quietly told an officer what Rocky had done, the bone was sealed into an evidence bag.
Rocky was not arrested immediately.
That infuriated Daniel.
But the officers explained that detectives would review the assault, child endangerment allegation, and witness statements.
Rocky used the delay like oxygen.
Before leaving voluntarily with his attorney, he handed Daniel a folder.
“Since everyone enjoys documents tonight.”
Daniel opened it.
Bank statements.
An account in Maya’s name.
Deposits totaling $840,000.
Maya stared.
“I’ve never seen that account.”
Rocky smiled.
“Of course.”
Daniel looked at her.
She recognized that old fear in his eyes.
Not accusation.
But shock.
Rocky knew exactly how to exploit it.
“You see?” Rocky said. “She married into money, then started moving it.”
Maya grabbed one statement.
The address listed beneath her name wasn’t theirs.
It was a post-office box.
The signature looked almost like hers.
Almost.
Samuel took the paperwork.
“This account was opened seven months after Evelyn died.”
Rocky nodded.
“When Maya already had access to the family office.”
“I never had access.”
Rocky shrugged.
“Prove it.”
Then he left.
For several minutes, Daniel said nothing.
Maya finally turned toward him.
“If you ask me whether I stole that money, I’m taking Emma and leaving.”
Daniel’s head snapped up.
“I’m not asking.”
“Your face is.”
“My face is realizing how many times he has created evidence that looks just real enough to hurt us.”
Maya’s anger softened.
Daniel looked exhausted.
“I failed you once by letting a piece of paper put doubt between us.”
He took her hands.
“I won’t do it again.”
The next morning, Samuel brought in a forensic accountant.
Within three hours, they found something Rocky had missed.
Every deposit into the account supposedly owned by Maya came from one of Rocky’s shell companies.
More importantly, every online login originated from an IP address connected to the executive suite at Carter Holdings.
Maya had never worked there.
Rocky had.
Daniel stared at the report.
“He framed her.”
The accountant nodded.
“But there’s another problem.”
“What?”
“The money didn’t stay in Maya’s account.”
He traced the transfers.
Funds moved through Maya’s fake account, then into a holding company in Delaware.
Samuel recognized the name immediately.
“RLC Ventures.”
Daniel frowned.
“What is that?”
Samuel looked grim.
“Rocky’s private company.”
Maya almost laughed.
“He framed me for stealing money he transferred back to himself?”
“Yes.”
The accountant turned another page.
“And this continued until last week.”
Daniel’s expression sharpened.
“Last week?”
Rocky hadn’t been hiding an old crime.
He was still moving money.
Then the accountant showed them one final transaction.
Two million dollars.
Scheduled for Monday morning.
From an account connected to Emma’s trust.
Maya felt sick.
“He’s still trying to take her money.”
May you like
Samuel nodded.
“And unless we move fast, he may succeed.”
