Chapter 7 - The Recording He Cut Apart

Daniel stared at Maya.
“What whole truth?”
Rocky leaned against the wall.
His confidence returned with frightening speed.
“Ask your wife.”
Maya stood.
“I know that recording.”
“Of course you do.”
“You edited it.”
Rocky laughed.
“Convenient.”
Daniel didn’t accuse her.
That almost made it harder.
“Maya. Tell me.”
She took a slow breath.
“That conversation happened after your mother died.”
“With who?”
“With your sister, Claire.”
Rocky’s eyes flickered.
Maya continued.
“I had found the fake DNA report in your desk. You were sleeping in the guest room. You barely spoke to me.”
Daniel looked down.
He remembered.
“I was terrified,” Maya said. “Not because Emma wasn’t yours. Because you were starting to believe your father.”
Rocky scoffed.
Maya ignored him.
“The full sentence was: ‘If Daniel ever learns the whole truth about how scared I am, I could lose everything because he’ll think I’m manipulating him.’”
Daniel looked toward Rocky.
“Play the entire recording.”
Rocky slipped the phone into his pocket.
“No.”
That answered enough.
But Maya wanted more than enough.
She called Claire.
Daniel’s younger sister answered from Chicago.
Maya put her on speaker.
“Claire, do you remember talking to me after Evelyn died?”
“About what?”
“The DNA report.”
Silence.
Then Claire said, “Yes.”
Rocky’s face hardened.
“Did I tell you Emma wasn’t Daniel’s?”
“No. You were hysterical because Daniel was questioning you.”
Maya closed her eyes briefly.
“Do you remember the sentence Rocky just played?”
Claire hesitated.
Then:
“Oh my God.”
“What?”
“I recorded that conversation too.”
Rocky stared at the phone.
Claire explained that at the time she had been documenting family conversations because she suspected someone was manipulating Evelyn’s estate.
Daniel went still.
“You suspected Dad?”
“I didn’t know who. But Mom had called me two days before she died.”
“What did she say?”
Claire’s voice cracked.
“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, don’t let Rocky erase Emma.’”
Maya covered her mouth.
Rocky shouted, “She was medicated!”
Claire fired back.
“She knew exactly who she was.”
Then she added:
“I still have the recording.”
Rocky grabbed his coat.
Daniel blocked the doorway again.
“You’re not leaving.”
Rocky shoved him.
Daniel did not shove back.
He simply looked at his father with a coldness Maya had never seen before.
“You fed my five-year-old daughter from a dog bowl.”
Rocky froze.
“You struck my wife with a plate.”
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“And now I’m learning you forged evidence to steal from my child.”
He pulled out his phone.
“Whatever loyalty I had left for you died in this room.”
Rocky stared at him.
Then smiled bitterly.
“You still don’t know what your mother was really protecting Emma from.”
Daniel’s hand stopped over the screen.
Maya felt a chill.
May you like
Rocky leaned closer.
“Ask yourself why Evelyn changed her estate only after Emma was born.”
