Chapter 11 - The Chase Without Running

Evelyn did not make it out of the hospital.
Two officers stopped her near the private elevator.
But when they searched her, the metal box was gone.
She smiled at Emma through the corridor glass.
“You have nothing linking me to your fall.”
Michael had implicated her, but his word alone could be attacked as the desperate accusation of a frightened suspect.
The stolen box could prove everything.
Detective Ramirez traced Evelyn’s calls.
Minutes before Michael entered Emma’s room, Evelyn contacted Samuel Pierce.
The call lasted eleven seconds.
Then Samuel’s phone disappeared from the network.
Daniel suspected the box had been transferred to him.
A statewide alert went out.
Emma’s condition worsened as the stress triggered contractions.
Doctors ordered everyone out.
For six hours, the criminal investigation continued while Emma fought to keep her son inside long enough for his heart rate to stabilize.
Daniel sat outside her room.
He had searched for Emma for most of his adult life.
Now he could do nothing but wait.
Near midnight, Detective Ramirez received a report.
Samuel Pierce’s vehicle had been found abandoned beside a private airfield.
Inside the trunk were gasoline cans, a portable shredder, and fragments of burned documents.
No metal box.
No cassette.
No Samuel.
Daniel checked Northstar’s flight records.
A company jet had been scheduled to depart for Canada, but the pilot canceled after noticing irregular authorization codes.
Security footage showed Samuel entering a hangar carrying Emma’s box.
He never came out.
Police surrounded the building.
Inside, they found Samuel sitting beside an industrial furnace.
The box lay open at his feet.
He had destroyed several documents.
But not the cassette.
He was holding it when officers entered.
Samuel threatened to crush it.
Detective Ramirez called Daniel from the scene.
Samuel demanded immunity.
“He says the recording proves Evelyn ordered Rebecca’s murder,” the detective explained. “He’ll surrender it only if prosecutors protect him.”
Emma overheard from her bed.
“No deal.”
Daniel looked at her.
“He may destroy it.”
“He’s protected Evelyn for thirty years. If you promise him safety, he’ll lie again.”
“What do you suggest?”
Emma thought of the woman on the old recording.
Her biological mother had spent her final days trusting no one.
Emma would not repeat that mistake.
“Tell Samuel we found Rebecca.”
Daniel stared at her.
“We haven’t.”
“He doesn’t know that.”
Detective Ramirez relayed the bluff.
Samuel’s confidence shattered.
Within minutes, he surrendered the tape.
Then he asked one terrified question:

“Is she alive?”
👉 Samuel’s fear suggested Rebecca Hayes’s story had not ended at the lake thirty-one years earlier.
