Chapter 12 - Rebecca’s Last Recording
The cassette from the metal box was not Rebecca’s final recording.
It was a copy of a longer interview.
A digital storage card had been hidden inside the cassette shell.
Technicians recovered nearly an hour of audio.
Emma listened from her hospital bed while Daniel sat beside her.
Rebecca described discovering that Evelyn Whitmore and Samuel Pierce had approved defective emergency monitors for distribution. Several patients died when the devices failed.
Rebecca gathered evidence and planned to report them.
Samuel discovered her plan.
Evelyn threatened Rebecca’s baby.
Rebecca fled with infant Emma and sought help from Linda and Robert Carter, former Northstar employees she trusted.
Then came the part that broke Daniel.
Rebecca had called him for help.
Samuel intercepted the call.
Using Daniel’s private office line, Samuel told Rebecca that Daniel had agreed to meet her at the lake.
But Daniel never received the message.
Samuel and Evelyn arrived instead.
They forced Rebecca’s car off the road.
Rebecca survived the crash and escaped into the woods, but she was injured.
She recorded the interview three days later from a hidden motel.
“I cannot go back for Emma,” Rebecca said through tears. “They will follow me to her. Linda must raise her. Daniel must believe I’m dead until it’s safe.”
Emma gripped Daniel’s hand.
The recording continued.
Rebecca planned to enter federal witness protection after meeting an investigator.
But before naming the investigator or her destination, the audio ended.
Samuel admitted that he found the motel hours later.
Rebecca was gone.
Evelyn ordered him to claim she had died.
For three decades, they did not know whether that was true.
Daniel bowed his head.
“My sister may have been alive all this time.”
Emma cried silently.
Not because she had suddenly gained a mother.
Because Rebecca had surrendered motherhood to keep her child alive.
Detective Ramirez entered with another discovery.
The federal investigator named in Rebecca’s notes had died twelve years earlier.
His archived files contained a sealed witness record under an alias.
The woman entered protection thirty-one years ago.
She left the program after Evelyn’s father died.
Her current status was unknown.
But the file included one recent emergency contact.
A woman living in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Her name was Rachel Bennett.
Daniel stared at the page.
Rebecca’s middle name was Rachel.
Emma’s contractions intensified.
A monitor sounded.
Doctors rushed inside.
