Chapter 3 - The Letter That Never Arrived

Daniel secured the rescue blanket beneath Emma’s arms and checked her pulse again.
The monitor emitted another restrained warning.
“We don’t have long,” he said.
Emma watched him attach the harness with careful, controlled movements.
“What was in the letter?”
“A request for a private meeting.”
“About what?”
“Your identity.”
Emma gave a weak, humorless laugh.
“My identity is Emma Carter. I’m a high school counselor from Denver.”
“That’s the identity Michael needed you to keep.”
The words frightened her more than the mountain.
Daniel checked the rope connection twice.
Then he removed the photograph again.
The young woman holding the infant wore a hospital bracelet. Though the writing was blurred by age, Emma recognized the crescent-shaped birthmark on the baby’s forehead.
Her birthmark.
“Who is she?” Emma asked.
“Rebecca Hayes.”
Daniel’s voice softened.
“My younger sister.”
Emma stared at him.
“My mother’s name was Linda Carter.”
“Linda adopted you.”
The wind seemed to disappear.
Emma’s adoptive parents had died in a car accident when she was nineteen. She had loved them deeply. They had never treated her as anything but their daughter.
Yet small details rushed back.
No baby pictures before she was six months old.
A sealed metal box Linda kept hidden in the attic.
The argument about a man named Daniel.
Emma swallowed.
“You’re saying Rebecca was my biological mother?”
“Yes.”
“And you’re…”
“Her brother.”
“My uncle?”
Daniel’s eyes glistened.
“I’ve been looking for you for thirty-one years.”
Emma’s fingers trembled against her stomach.
The baby kicked once beneath her palms.
A painful, beautiful reminder that something inside her was still fighting.
“Why did my parents hide me?”
“They were protecting you.”
“From whom?”
Daniel glanced at the helicopter, then at the unstable slope above them.
“From the Whitmore family.”
Emma’s stomach tightened.
Michael’s mother’s maiden name was Whitmore.
She had always spoken proudly of her family’s private investment empire, Whitmore Holdings. She treated Emma like an embarrassing temporary attachment to her son.
But Emma had never understood why Evelyn Whitmore hated her before they had even met.
Daniel’s expression confirmed the connection.
“Michael knew who you were before he married you,” he said.
Emma went cold for a reason that had nothing to do with snow.
“No.”
“He didn’t meet you by accident.”
“No.”
“He was sent to find you.”
Emma’s breathing became rapid.
Daniel steadied her shoulders.
“Stay with me.”
“My entire marriage…”
“I’m sorry.”
“Was it all planned?”
Daniel did not answer quickly enough.
Emma looked toward the helicopter, but suddenly the rescue no longer felt like escape.

It felt like the doorway into a nightmare she had been living without knowing it.
👉 Michael had not married Emma for love—he had married her because of something she legally owned.
