Chapter 6 - The Hospital Trap

Emma arrived at the hospital alive.

Her body temperature was dangerously low. She had a fractured wrist, a dislocated shoulder, deep bruising along her side, and early signs of fetal distress.

But her son still had a heartbeat.

Daniel remained outside the trauma room while doctors treated her. He stood with snow melting from his clothes, watching every person who entered the corridor.

Forty minutes later, Michael arrived.

He ran through the emergency entrance with Evelyn beside him.

“Where is my wife?”

His performance was flawless.

His voice cracked.

His eyes were red.

When he saw Daniel, however, he stopped so suddenly that Evelyn walked into his back.

Recognition flashed between them.

Daniel noticed.

So did Evelyn.

Her face lost all color.

“You,” she whispered.

Michael recovered first.

“Who the hell are you?”

Daniel stepped between him and Emma’s room.

“The man who pulled her off the mountain.”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“Then let me see her.”

“No.”

“I’m her husband.”

“And she says you pushed her.”

The corridor went silent.

Evelyn laughed once, sharply.

“Emma is confused. She’s been emotionally unstable for months.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You rehearsed that quickly.”

A uniformed park officer approached and asked Michael to surrender his jacket and belongings as potential evidence.

Michael’s hand instinctively touched his coat pocket.

Emma’s phone was still inside.

Evelyn noticed the movement.

She stepped forward, pretending to lose her balance, and grabbed Michael’s arm.

In the confusion, her hand slipped into his pocket.

Daniel caught her wrist before she could remove the phone.

“Don’t.”

Evelyn’s polished expression vanished.

“You have no authority here.”

Daniel released her only when the officer took control.

Michael began shouting.

“This is insane! My wife nearly died and you’re treating me like a criminal?”

The officer removed Emma’s phone from Michael’s jacket.

Michael went quiet.

Daniel watched the panic enter his eyes.

“You said she took your phone,” the officer said.

Michael’s answer came too slowly.

“She must have put hers in my pocket before she ran.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“While planning to kill herself?”

Michael turned toward him.

“You don’t know anything about my marriage.”

“I know why you married her.”

For the first time, Michael looked afraid.

Inside the trauma room, an alarm sounded.

Doctors rushed around Emma’s bed.

Daniel turned toward the glass.

A nurse hurried into the hallway.

“The baby’s heart rate is dropping.”

Michael moved toward the door.

Daniel blocked him again.

Then Emma’s voice came weakly from inside.

“Keep him away from my son.”

👉 As doctors fought to save the baby, Michael realized Emma was conscious enough to testify.
