Chapter 1 - The Man Who Knew Her Name

The rescue specialist dropped from the hovering helicopter and slammed onto both knees beside Emma Carter.
Snow exploded beneath him.
The narrow ledge shook under the force of his landing, sending loose powder spinning into the white emptiness below. Before Emma’s head could strike the frozen rock behind her, his gloved hand caught her neck and shoulder.
“Easy. I’ve got you.”
Emma could barely see him.
Her eyelashes were crusted with ice. Her torn maternity dress clung to her nine-month belly. Every breath felt like broken glass scraping through her chest.
Both hands covered her abdomen.
“Save my baby,” she whispered.
The silver-haired rescuer planted one boot into the snow and pulled a thermal blanket from his orange-and-black pack.
“Neither of you dies here.”
His voice was low.
Certain.
For the first time since Michael had pushed her over the edge, Emma wanted to believe someone.
The rescuer wrapped the blanket around her shoulders without pressing against her stomach. Then he lifted her face toward the sunlight.
His expression changed.
His blue eyes fixed on the crescent-shaped birthmark near her hairline.
The color drained from his weathered face.
“Emma…”
His breath caught.
“I found you.”
Her fear sharpened.
She pulled away and guarded her belly harder.
“Who are you?”
The man slowly raised both hands, showing he would not force her.
Then he opened a waterproof case inside his jacket.
He removed an old photograph sealed beneath clear plastic.
Emma saw only part of it—a young woman holding an infant wrapped in a faded yellow blanket.
The rescuer held the picture closer.
“Your mother sent me.”
Emma stared at him.
“My mother is dead.”
A medical sensor clipped to her finger released one sharp warning tone.
The rescuer looked toward the helicopter and gave a decisive signal.
A rescue harness began descending.
Then he turned the photograph fully toward Emma.
Her lips parted.
The woman in the picture had Emma’s face.
And standing behind her was the silver-haired man—thirty years younger.
He leaned close enough for Emma to hear him over the rotor thunder.
“Michael lied about everything.”
Emma’s heart seemed to stop.
Because Michael was not just her husband.

He was the reason she was freezing on that ledge.
👉 But before Emma could demand the truth, the mountain above them began to crack.
