Chapter 9 - The Betrayal Inside Northstar

Daniel left the hospital room and called Samuel Pierce.

No answer.

He called the law firm.

Samuel had not been seen since that morning.

Detective Ramirez searched traffic records.

Samuel’s car had entered Rocky Mountain National Park forty minutes before Michael and Emma.

It exited shortly after Michael reported her missing.

Emma felt the walls closing in.

“He was there.”

Daniel nodded.

“He may have watched the whole thing.”

“Why?”

“To make sure Michael completed the job.”

The detective obtained security footage from a gas station near the park entrance.

Michael’s black SUV appeared first.

Samuel’s gray sedan followed three vehicles behind.

On another camera, Evelyn’s driver waited near the southern exit.

This was not an impulsive crime.

It was an operation.

Michael had taken Emma to the overlook.

Samuel monitored from a distance.

Evelyn arranged the escape.

But something had gone wrong.

Emma survived.

And Daniel’s rescue helicopter found her far sooner than they expected.

“How did you find me?” Emma asked.

Daniel explained that the letter sent to her had contained a nearly invisible tracking strip inside the envelope. It was a security measure because previous attempts to contact potential witnesses had been intercepted.

The tracker moved into the mountains that morning.

Daniel became suspicious and contacted the rescue service he funded.

He personally joined the search.

Emma’s eyes narrowed.

“The letter was in Michael’s SUV.”

“Yes.”

“So you weren’t tracking me.”

Daniel understood.

They had followed the envelope.

Michael still had it when he pushed her.

That was why the helicopter searched near the overlook.

Michael’s attempt to steal the letter had led Daniel directly to her.

For the first time, Emma felt something close to triumph.

Michael’s greed had saved her life.

Detective Ramirez entered with new evidence.

Investigators had recovered data from Emma’s phone.

The emergency recording was damaged, but the audio remained.

Michael’s voice filled the hospital room.

“Give me the envelope.”

Then Emma’s scream.

Metal breaking.

Her desperate cry for help.

And Michael’s final words:

“No one is coming for you.”

Silence followed.

Daniel looked toward the hallway where Michael sat under guard.

Emma expected to feel satisfaction.

Instead, tears rolled down her face.

She had loved the man on that recording.

She had built a nursery with him.

She had trusted him to hold her hand during the birth of their son.

The detective touched her arm.

“We have enough to arrest him for attempted murder.”

Emma shook her head.

“Not yet.”

Everyone stared at her.

“What are you waiting for?” Daniel asked.

Emma looked toward Evelyn.

“The person who ordered it.”

👉 Emma no longer wanted Michael alone—she wanted the entire conspiracy exposed in one room.
