Chapter 4 - The Divorce Ambush

Ruby returned to the house just after noon.
She parked at the curb.
Her suitcase was in the trunk.
Her daughter slept against her shoulder.
Before entering, Ruby activated the voice recorder on her phone.
Then she opened the front door.
Eliana sat in the living room with Jameson’s elderly aunt and uncle.
They looked uncomfortable.
Brooke was upstairs.
Jameson stood beside the fireplace holding the envelope.
No one greeted Ruby.
Eliana looked at the baby.
“You should put her down before this gets unpleasant.”
Ruby remained near the door.
“What is this?”
Jameson extended the envelope.
“Our marriage is over.”
His voice was calm.
Almost rehearsed.
Ruby looked at the relatives.
“Why are they here?”
“As witnesses,” Eliana said.
“To what?”
“To your behavior.”
Ruby understood.
They expected anger.
They wanted screaming, threats, perhaps an attempt to remove the baby.
Anything they could describe later as instability.
Jameson opened the envelope and removed the agreement.
“I’ve been unhappy for years.”
Ruby said nothing.
“I tried to make this work.”
Silence.
“You pushed me away.”
Ruby looked toward the staircase.
Brooke’s bare foot was visible behind the railing.
Jameson continued.
“The house is mine. Mom provided the down payment. You signed away your interest years ago.”
Eliana lifted her chin.
“We allowed you to live here.”
Ruby almost admired the arrogance.
“Allowed me?”
Jameson pushed the papers toward her.
“Sign today, and I’ll give you twenty thousand dollars.”
“What happens if I refuse?”
His expression hardened.
“I file for full custody.”
The older relatives looked shocked.
Eliana quickly added, “The child needs stability.”
Ruby looked at Jameson.
“You’re threatening to take our daughter because I won’t surrender property?”
“You have no property.”
Brooke stepped halfway down the stairs.
She wore Ruby’s emerald robe and a triumphant smile.
That was when Ruby’s final doubt disappeared.
They were not bluffing.
They believed she had already lost.
Ruby carefully placed her daughter into the stroller near the door.
Then she asked one quiet question.
“Did you use my inheritance for this house?”
Jameson froze.
Eliana answered too quickly.
“You didn’t have an inheritance.”
Ruby watched Jameson’s eyes move toward his mother.

The recorder captured everything.
👉 Eliana’s denial proved she knew where the money came from—and Ruby’s next question made Jameson realize she had seen the bank transfer.
