Chapter 5 - The Number That Changed the Room

Ruby picked up the settlement.

She did not sign it.

She looked at the first page.

“One hundred fifty thousand dollars.”

Eliana’s face tightened.

Jameson said, “What about it?”

“That’s the amount your mother supposedly gave us.”

“She did.”

Ruby looked at Eliana.

“Which account did it come from?”

Eliana folded her arms.

“I don’t discuss my finances with you.”

“You told everyone it came from your savings.”

“It did.”

Ruby opened her phone and displayed a transfer record.

The older relatives leaned forward.

Jameson stepped closer.

“Where did you get that?”

“My grandfather’s investment account.”

He stared at the screen.

Ruby continued.

“The mailing address was changed to your mother’s house.”

Eliana stood.

“This is ridiculous.”

“Your cousin notarized a forged deed.”

“You signed that deed.”

“No.”

Jameson’s confidence slipped.

“You signed it at the kitchen table.”

“I was in the hospital with our daughter that day.”

The room went silent.

Ruby had checked the date.

Their daughter had been admitted overnight with a severe respiratory infection.

Ruby never left the hospital.

Security footage and medical records proved it.

Jameson looked at Eliana.

“You said she signed.”

“She did.”

“She couldn’t have.”

Eliana’s voice rose.

“Then she signed another day.”

Ruby watched them turn on each other.

Brooke descended one more step.

“What does this mean?”

Jameson ignored her.

Ruby placed the settlement on the coffee table.

“It means the house was purchased with stolen money.”

Eliana pointed at her.

“You are not taking my son’s home.”

Ruby remained calm.

“I haven’t decided what happens to the house.”

Jameson laughed nervously.

“You don’t decide anything.”

Then the doorbell rang.

A uniformed officer stood outside with a civil investigator and Ruby’s attorney.

Jameson’s face drained of color.

Eliana demanded to know why police were there.

Ruby lifted her daughter from the stroller.

“Because someone entered this home using forged property documents.”

Brooke suddenly pulled the robe tighter around herself.

The officer asked everyone to step outside while the investigator secured potential evidence.

Jameson blocked the doorway.

“This is my house.”

Rachel held up the county record.

“That is precisely what is being investigated.”

👉 The police had not come to arrest anyone—but the temporary property order was enough to lock Jameson, Eliana, and Brooke outside.
