Chapter 8 - The Account Under the House

The property-management company had been created eighteen months earlier.
Ruby knew nothing about it.
Its bank account received regular deposits from Jameson’s personal account.
At first, the amounts were small.
Then Rachel found a transfer for $75,000.
The money came from a line of credit secured through documents bearing Ruby’s forged signature.
Jameson had used the house’s apparent equity to borrow against property he did not legally control.
Half the money went into the company.
The other half disappeared into an account under Eliana’s name.
Ruby stared at the records.
“What was the money for?”
Jameson looked at Brooke.
Brooke looked at Eliana.
No one answered.
Rachel continued tracing payments.
The company paid for hotel rooms, luxury furniture, and a lease on Brooke’s car.
It also paid a private investigator.
Ruby felt her skin go cold.
“For what?”
The investigator’s invoices named Ruby.
Jameson had hired someone to follow her.
The reports documented when she visited her father, attended therapy, or took their daughter to pediatric appointments.
He collected photographs showing Ruby crying outside a medical office.
He planned to use them in the custody case.
Eliana had written notes beside several images.
EMOTIONALLY UNSTABLE.
SEPARATED FROM HUSBAND.
CHILD OFTEN WITH GRANDMOTHER.
Ruby’s hands trembled for the first time.
Not because she feared losing.
Because she understood how long they had been preparing to make her look unfit.
Jameson saw her expression.
“I never wanted to take our daughter.”
“You wrote it into the settlement.”
“Mom said it would make you sign.”
Eliana snapped, “Stop blaming me.”
Ruby looked at Jameson.
“You threatened me with my child because you thought fear would make me surrender.”
“I wasn’t going to follow through.”
“You moved your girlfriend into our home.”
Brooke stepped back.
“I didn’t know about the custody part.”
Ruby turned toward her.
“But you knew he was still married.”
Brooke’s mouth tightened.
“Yes.”
“And you wore my clothes while he served me papers.”
Brooke lowered her eyes.
The triumph was gone.
Rachel received a new message from the bank.
The line of credit had been frozen.
The company account was under review.
Eliana’s account had also been restricted pending investigation.
Eliana looked at Jameson.
“You said no one could trace it.”
Jameson’s face collapsed.
The relatives behind the tape heard every word.
One of them began crying.
May you like
The family’s private image was dissolving in the middle of the driveway.
👉 Ruby now knew where $75,000 had gone—but the other half had funded a secret arrangement involving Eliana and the house next door.
