Chapter 1 - The Leash Around My Daughter’s Neck

“Mommy... it hurts!”
I heard Lily scream before I even reached the laundry room.
Then I saw her.
My fourteen-month-old daughter was on her hands and knees on the tile, barefoot in her pale pink dress, sobbing so hard her little body shook.
A dog leash hung loosely around her neck.
My mother-in-law, Diane, had both hands wrapped around the other end.
And she was pulling.
Not guiding her.
Not playing with her.
Dragging her.
Lily’s knees scraped across the tile while her palms desperately searched for something to grab.
“Stop!”
I charged across the room.
Diane barely had time to turn before I ripped the leash from her hands, dropped to my knees, and unclipped it from Lily.
I threw it across the floor.
Diane lunged forward.
I stood.
My hand moved before I could think.
The slap cracked through the room.
Diane stumbled backward and crashed into a laundry basket.
“You crazy little—”
“Stay away from my daughter.”
I pulled Lily behind me.
That was when Ryan appeared in the hallway.
My husband.
Lily’s father.
For one second, relief flooded through me.
Surely he would see our crying baby.
Surely he would see the leash.
Instead, Ryan looked at his mother’s red cheek.
Then he looked at me.
“How dare you hit my mother?”
I couldn’t speak.
Lily could.
Her tiny fingers tightened around the back of my blouse.
She looked at her father through her tears.
“Daddy used to do that.”
Everything inside me stopped.
Ryan looked away.
Diane went silent.
Then Lily raised one trembling finger toward the ceiling.
The little security camera above the cabinets was blinking red.
Ryan saw it.
So did Diane.
They both turned pale.
Ryan immediately stepped toward it.
I blocked him.

And Lily whispered something that changed my marriage forever.
“You and Daddy didn’t do that alone.”
