Chapter 10 - The Policy in My Name

I didn’t assume the worst.

Karen wouldn’t let me.

“A life insurance policy isn’t evidence of murder,” she said firmly.

She was right.

We needed facts.

The policy turned out to be real.

Ryan had purchased it eighteen months earlier.

Spouses buy insurance all the time.

What mattered was the beneficiary.

Ryan.

Again, normal.

Then came the strange part.

Four months earlier, the beneficiary had been changed.

The new beneficiary was Parker Family Development LLC.

I had never agreed to that.

The coverage amount was $3 million.

Almost exactly what Diane needed to rescue the failing development project.

I sat silently in Karen’s office.

“Can they do that?”

“The policyholder can change a beneficiary under certain policies,” she said. “That doesn’t mean they can harm you. But combined with everything else, investigators will want to understand why.”

Ryan called that afternoon.

This time I answered with Karen listening.

“Why is your company the beneficiary of my life insurance?”

Silence.

Then:

“My mother changed it.”

“Could she change it without you?”

Another silence.

“No.”

I closed my eyes.

“Were you planning to hurt me?”

“No! Emma, God, no.”

For the first time, Ryan sounded genuinely horrified.

“Then explain it.”

He said Diane claimed the policy would reassure Thomas because the development company was undercapitalized.

Ryan had agreed.

Another shortcut.

Another lie.

Another decision involving my life made without me.

Then he whispered:

“I didn’t know Mom was going to do what she did to Lily.”

“You put the leash on Lily before.”

He began crying.

“Twice. For a few seconds. Mom called it behavioral conditioning.”

I felt sick.

“You let your mother teach you to treat our baby like a dog.”

“I know.”

“No. You know now because you’re losing everything.”

Before hanging up, Ryan gave me one useful fact.

Diane kept the original company records in a safe at her house.

And Thomas had been demanding she destroy them.

Ryan said he could get them.

Karen shook her head immediately.

“No secret missions. No stealing. If he wants to cooperate, he does it legally.”

So Ryan did.

He contacted investigators.

And for the first time since I walked into that laundry room, my husband stopped protecting Diane.
