Chapter 8 - Diane Comes for Lily
Two days later, Diane came to Rachel’s house.
She brought a lawyer.
And a smile.
She stood on the sidewalk and announced that Ryan intended to seek emergency custody because I had “removed Lily from the marital home.”
Karen had anticipated it.
The police report existed.
The pediatric examination existed.
The video existed.
Diane didn’t know Dad had recovered it.
Her confidence lasted until Karen walked outside.
“You should leave.”
Diane smiled.
“Emma assaulted me.”
Karen handed her attorney a copy of the incident report.
Then she showed him one still image.
Diane gripping the leash.
Lily on the floor.
His expression changed immediately.
Diane’s didn’t.
“You have no context.”
I stepped onto the porch.
“What context makes dragging a fourteen-month-old acceptable?”
For once, Diane had no clever answer.
Then she looked directly at me.
“You’ve always been too weak for this family.”
I almost laughed.
For years, that sentence would have hurt.
Now I understood what she meant by weak.
Someone who wouldn’t surrender her inheritance.
Someone who wouldn’t let Diane run her marriage.
Someone who loved her daughter more than keeping appearances.
Diane pointed at me.
“Ryan will choose us.”
“Us?”
She realized her mistake.
Karen heard it too.
Not Ryan will choose me.
Us.
There was still someone else.
That evening, Dad called.
He had identified the unknown phone that accessed our security system.
Not through the camera account.
Through our Wi-Fi logs.
The device belonged to a man named Thomas Bell.
I knew the name.
He was the loan officer handling Parker Family Development’s financing.
But when Karen searched deeper, she found something worse.
Thomas wasn’t merely their lender.
For nearly eighteen months, he had been receiving regular payments from Diane.
And one payment had been made the morning before Lily was dragged across my floor.
