Chapter 11 - Diane Turns on Her Son
Diane called Ryan thirty-one times.
Then she left a voicemail.
He gave it to investigators.
“You ungrateful coward. I fixed everything for you. Your wife was going to leave you with nothing, and now you’re choosing her?”
Ryan looked destroyed when I heard it.
I wasn’t comforted.
He had choices long before that moment.
He had chosen Diane every time.
The safe was secured through lawful process before Diane could empty it.
Inside were company ledgers, loan documents, copies of the forged deed, correspondence with Thomas, and handwritten notes.
One note contained three words:
EMMA — REACTION INCIDENT.
Underneath was the date I was supposed to stay at Rachel’s.
The date I came home early.
My hands went cold.
That was it.
The laundry-room confrontation hadn’t been spontaneous.
Diane had scheduled it.
Her notes described a plan to have Ryan record my reaction after Diane provoked a confrontation involving Lily.
The intended outcome was written underneath:
ANGER / ASSAULT / CUSTODY LEVERAGE.
Diane had wanted footage of me losing control.
She got it.
I had slapped her.
But the camera also captured what happened immediately before it.
The evidence she wanted to use against me became evidence against her.
And that still wasn’t the worst discovery.
Investigators found earlier videos on a storage drive from Diane’s house.
Short clips.
Lily crying beside the pet bowl.
Ryan holding the leash.
Diane instructing him.
“Don’t pick her up when she cries.”
Another showed Diane saying:
“Emma babies her. We have to break that attachment.”
I walked out of the room before the video ended.
Rachel followed me.
I finally cried.
Not because Diane hated me.
I could survive that.
I cried because Lily had been calling for me when I wasn’t there.
And the person who should have protected her had helped teach her fear instead.
That night, Ryan sent one message.
I will accept whatever happens. Just protect Lily.
For once, I believed him.
But protecting Lily now meant facing Diane publicly.
Because Diane had decided to fight every allegation.
