Chapter 12 - The Arrest Under the Chandelier

Two state investigators entered with a county detective.

The ballroom went silent.

The lead investigator approached Tabitha.

“Tabitha Morgan, we have a warrant to search the property and seize financial records connected to the Morgan Family Preservation Trust.”

Tabitha straightened.

“You cannot enter my house.”

Sarah answered from behind her.

“It isn’t only your house.”

The investigator continued.

“You are also being detained for suspected fraud, evidence destruction, identity misuse, and witness intimidation.”

Tabitha turned toward Colin.

“Tell them this is a misunderstanding.”

Colin did not move.

“You put stolen money in my name.”

“I protected your future.”

“You protected yourself.”

She looked at Taylor next.

“You did this because I made you serve tea?”

Taylor’s expression stayed calm.

“No. You did this because you believed humiliating people made them powerless.”

The detective asked Tabitha to turn around.

She resisted.

Her voice climbed.

“This family would be nothing without me!”

Sarah stepped closer.

“This family survived in spite of you.”

The detective placed handcuffs around Tabitha’s wrists.

The woman who had ruled the mansion through fear was led beneath the same chandelier where she had humiliated Taylor.

No one defended her.

Not one guest.

Not one relative.

At the doorway, Tabitha twisted back toward Colin.

“If you let them take me, you are no longer my son.”

Colin’s face crumpled.

Then he answered quietly.

“I stopped being your son the day you made me your shield.”

The doors closed behind her.

Taylor exhaled for what felt like the first time since the wedding.

But the legal battle was not over.

The investigators had found evidence of fraud.

They had not yet found all the missing money.
