Chapter 17 - The Choice Taylor Made

One year after the wedding, Taylor stood beneath the white roses again.

Not for another ceremony.

The community center was opening.

Families filled the former ballroom.

Children ran across the polished floor.

Sarah stood beside the entrance greeting guests.

Colin arrived alone.

He wore a simple navy suit.

No family crest.

No expensive watch.

No expectation.

Taylor watched him help an elderly woman carry her bags inside.

Over the past year, he had continued therapy.

He worked as a project manager for a nonprofit housing organization.

He had sold every luxury item purchased with trust money and donated the proceeds to the center.

He had also signed the divorce papers again after the originals expired.

The choice remained Taylor’s.

After the speeches, Colin found her in the quiet dining room.

“I’m proud of you,” he said.

Taylor looked at the round tables.

“I’m proud of Sarah.”

“You saved her inheritance.”

“She saved herself. I only believed her.”

Colin nodded.

“That matters.”

He placed a small envelope on the table.

The divorce papers.

“I won’t bring them up again.”

Taylor rested her hand on the envelope.

“I hated you for staying silent.”

“I know.”

“I hated myself for believing marriage would change you.”

“I know that too.”

She looked into his eyes.

“I don’t trust promises anymore.”

“You shouldn’t.”

“I trust patterns.”

Colin swallowed.

“And what pattern do you see?”

“A man who has spent a year choosing courage when no one rewarded him.”

Hope appeared in his face, but he did not reach for her.

Taylor slid the envelope back.

“This is not forgiveness for one apology.”

“I understand.”

“It’s a chance to build something different.”

His eyes filled.

“I’ll earn it every day.”

Taylor took his hand.

Not because she had forgotten.

Not because the pain had vanished.

But because he had finally become a man who could stand beside her without hiding behind fear.

👉 Taylor had reclaimed her marriage on her own terms—but one last symbol from the wedding night still needed a new meaning.
