Chapter 6 - Why Sarah Came Back
Taylor met Sarah in a quiet diner the next morning.
Sarah was fifty-two, with silver-streaked dark hair and tired eyes.
She held her coffee cup with both hands.
“I didn’t come to ruin your wedding,” she said.
“Then why were you there?”
“To see Colin.”
“Why didn’t you speak to him?”
Sarah looked away.
“Because your mother-in-law told everyone I was dangerous.”
She opened an old leather folder.
Inside were letters, bank statements, and court filings.
Twenty-seven years earlier, Sarah had discovered Tabitha withdrawing money from Margaret Morgan’s accounts.
When Sarah confronted her, Tabitha accused Sarah of stealing.
The family believed Tabitha.
Sarah was cut off.
Margaret died before the truth could be repaired.
“Why didn’t you fight?” Taylor asked.
“I tried.”
Sarah slid forward a letter.
“My attorney disappeared from the case after Tabitha threatened to expose his addiction. Then documents went missing.”
Taylor studied the letter.
“Why now?”
“Because I received an email two months ago.”
“From whom?”
Sarah hesitated.
“Your husband.”
Taylor’s pulse changed.
“Colin contacted you?”
“He said he had found something in his father’s safe. He asked me to come to the wedding because he wanted to tell his mother the truth in front of witnesses.”
Taylor stared at her.
“But he said nothing.”
Sarah’s eyes filled with disappointment.
“When Tabitha saw me, she whispered something to him.”
“What?”
“She told him that if he exposed her, she would destroy you.”
Taylor’s jaw tightened.
Colin had known there was a secret.
He had invited Sarah.
Then he had watched Taylor be humiliated and remained silent.
Her phone vibrated.
A message from Colin appeared.
