Chapter 15 - The Rule Read in Court
Tabitha entered the courtroom in a gray suit.
Without pearls, servants, or chandeliers, she looked smaller.
Still, when she saw Taylor, contempt returned to her eyes.
Douglas Reed testified first.
He described the forged transfers.
The hidden account.
The attempt to frame Colin.
Sarah testified next.
She told the jury how she had been expelled from the family after exposing the theft.
Then Colin took the stand.
His voice shook, but he did not look away.
“My mother taught me that fear was loyalty,” he said. “I believed her until I watched her use that fear against my wife.”
Finally, Taylor was called.
The prosecutor placed the black notebook in front of her.
“Do you recognize this?”
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
“The rules Tabitha used to control the Morgan household.”
The prosecutor asked her to read the first rule Tabitha enforced after the wedding.
Taylor opened the book.
Her fingers were steady.
“The youngest woman eats after everyone else.”
A hush moved through the courtroom.
“Why was that important?” the prosecutor asked.
“Because it showed me how her system worked. She created rules that placed one person above accountability and everyone else beneath her authority.”
The defense attorney stood.
“Mrs. Morgan, isn’t it true that you used these rules to provoke my client?”
Taylor turned toward Tabitha.
“No. I obeyed them.”
A few jurors glanced at one another.
Taylor continued.
“She simply never imagined the rules would apply to her too.”
Tabitha’s jaw clenched.
The prosecutor then played Margaret’s recording.
When Margaret named Tabitha as the thief, Tabitha lost control.
“She was confused!” she shouted. “That money belonged to me!”
The courtroom went still.
Her attorney closed his eyes.
