Chapter 1

PART 1:

Emily stood at the kitchen sink with one hand pressed against her lower back and the other gripping a greasy pan she could barely lift.

The sink was overflowing.

Plates.

Bowls.

Silverware.

Coffee mugs with dried rings at the bottom.

Someone had eaten lunch, left the mess, then waited for her to clean it.

She was eight months pregnant.

Her ankles were swollen.

Her face was pale.

Every breath came out shaky.

Then her sister-in-law walked in, holding another dirty plate.

She didn’t place it down.

She tossed it beside the sink.

The ceramic hit the counter with a sharp crack.

Emily flinched.

“You live here for free,” her sister-in-law said. “At least clean.”

Behind her, Ethan’s mother stood with her arms folded.

Two cousins leaned against the hallway wall.

One of them had a phone out, recording.

Emily looked at the camera, then back at the sink.

Her eyes filled with tears, but she swallowed them down.

She had learned that crying only made them laugh harder.

“I’m eight months pregnant,” Emily said quietly.

Her mother-in-law lifted her chin.

“Pregnancy isn’t an excuse.”

A short laugh came from the living room.

Someone whispered, “She always has a reason.”

Emily’s hand tightened around the edge of the sink.

The pain in her back sharpened.

Not the normal ache she had been feeling for weeks.

This was deeper.

Lower.

Wrong.

She looked down and saw her fingers trembling.

The plate her sister-in-law had thrown slid from the counter, hit the tile, and shattered near her feet.

Everyone went still for one second.

Then her sister-in-law rolled her eyes.

“Great. Now clean that too.”

Emily pressed a hand to her stomach.

The baby shifted hard.

Then the pain hit again.

She gasped.

“Something’s wrong.”

Nobody moved.

In the living room, the television kept playing.

A laugh track filled the house.

Her mother-in-law looked annoyed, not worried.

“Don’t start,” she said. “Ethan isn’t here to rescue you.”

Emily tried to take one step away from the broken glass.

Her knees weakened.

She grabbed the counter.

The phone was still pointed at her.

Then the front door opened hard.

Ethan stepped inside in his work boots, his shirt wrinkled, his face exhausted from a twelve-hour shift.

He stopped halfway through the doorway.

His eyes went from the filthy kitchen, to the broken plate, to the phone recording, to Emily shaking at the sink.

Then he saw her hand on her stomach.

“Emily?”

May you like

His voice changed.

👉 And when Ethan heard what they had done to his pregnant wife, the whole house went silent.
