Chapter 7

PART 7:

The moving workers packed what belonged to them.

Not Emily’s towels.

Not Emily’s cookware.

Not the nursery blankets his sister had tried to take “because they were cute.”

When his sister slipped a set of baby clothes into her bag, Ethan saw it.

“Put it back.”

She flushed red.

“I was just—”

“Put it back.”

She did.

By evening, the house was quiet.

For the first time in months.

Ethan swept the broken plate from the kitchen floor himself.

Then he washed every dish.

Not because Emily asked.

Because she should never have had to.

Three weeks later, Emily gave birth to a small but healthy baby boy.

He came early.

Tiny.

Furious.

Loud enough to make every nurse laugh.

When they placed him on Emily’s chest, she sobbed so hard Ethan had to hold both of them.

“He’s okay,” Ethan kept whispering. “You’re both okay.”

Emily kissed the baby’s forehead.

For the first time in a long time, her body relaxed.

But the story did not end with a baby and forgiveness.

Ethan’s family tried to come to the hospital.

His mother brought flowers.

His sister brought balloons.

They expected tears.

They expected access.

They expected that a newborn would erase everything.

Ethan met them in the hallway before they reached Emily’s room.

His mother smiled like nothing had happened.

“I’m here to see my grandson.”

Ethan stayed in front of the door.

“No.”

Her smile vanished.

“Excuse me?”

“You don’t get to meet the baby today.”

His sister’s eyes filled.

“Ethan, don’t be cruel.”

He looked at her.

May you like

“Cruel was filming his mother while she cried at a sink.”

👉 When Ethan told them Emily didn’t even know they were there, his family finally realized who had shut the door.
