Chapter 4

PART 4:
The week before everything happened, Emily’s doctor warned her again.
Her blood pressure was up.
Her swelling was worse.
She needed rest, hydration, and no unnecessary stress.
Ethan had looked scared.
“I’ll talk to them,” he said.
Emily squeezed his hand.
“Please don’t make it a fight.”
He nodded.
But when he talked to his mother that night, she cried.
She said he was abandoning his family.
She said Emily had changed him.
She said Emily was using the pregnancy to control the house.
Ethan came upstairs looking defeated.
“I’ll handle it,” he told Emily.
But he didn’t.
Not fast enough.
And the next morning, his family punished her for almost getting them confronted.
His sister left breakfast dishes on purpose.
His cousin spilled coffee and walked away.
His mother sat in the living room and announced, “Some women think carrying a baby makes them queens.”
By noon, the kitchen looked like a restaurant had closed after a rush.
Emily tried to ignore it.
She sat in the nursery with a bottle of water and her doctor’s instructions open on her phone.
Then Ethan’s mother appeared at the door.
“The kitchen is disgusting.”
Emily looked up.
“I need to rest.”
His mother’s eyes narrowed.
“So do I. But someone has to be useful.”
Emily should have called Ethan.
She knew that later.
She should have locked the bedroom door.
She should have refused.
But months of small humiliations had trained her to avoid explosions.
So she walked downstairs.
She washed one plate.
Then another.
Then another.
By the time Ethan’s sister threw the last plate beside her and called her a freeloader, Emily’s body was already warning her.
And they were recording it for fun.
The ambulance arrived seven minutes after Ethan’s call.
Those seven minutes changed the house forever.
Ethan sat on the kitchen floor with Emily between his knees, holding her upright, whispering to her.
“Stay with me, Em. Breathe. I’ve got you.”
His mother kept hovering.
“She’s being dramatic. She was standing five minutes ago.”
Ethan looked up slowly.
“Say one more word.”
May you like
His mother stepped back.
👉 When the paramedics checked Emily’s blood pressure, Ethan finally understood how dangerous his family’s cruelty had become.
