Chapter 5

PART 5:
The paramedics entered and immediately took over.
One checked Emily’s blood pressure.
His face tightened.
Another asked how far along she was.
“Thirty-four weeks,” Ethan said, his voice shaking now.
Emily grabbed his hand.
“The baby…”
“We’re going to take care of both of you,” the paramedic said.
As they lifted Emily onto the stretcher, Ethan’s sister started crying.
Not for Emily.
For herself.
“Ethan, you can’t kick us out. Where are we supposed to go?”
Ethan stared at her.
“My pregnant wife is being taken to the hospital because you people treated her like staff, and you’re asking me about your living situation?”
His sister looked down.
His mother tried again.
“Ethan, we’re family.”
Ethan’s voice cracked, but his eyes stayed hard.
“So is she.”
Then he followed the stretcher out.
At the hospital, everything moved fast.
Monitors.
Questions.
Nurses.
A doctor with a serious face.
Emily had been dehydrated, overexerted, and under dangerous stress.
The baby’s heart rate needed close monitoring.
They admitted her immediately.
Ethan sat beside her bed with both hands wrapped around hers.
For the first time in months, Emily saw him fully understand.
Not part of it.
Not the softened version.
All of it.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Emily stared at the ceiling, tears slipping into her hair.
“I kept telling myself they just needed time.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No. I needed to listen.”
She turned her face toward him.
“I didn’t want to make you choose.”
His eyes filled.
“They made the choice when they hurt you.”
For two days, Emily stayed in the hospital.
The baby stabilized.
The doctors were cautious but hopeful.
Ethan did not leave except to shower once in the family bathroom.
He slept in a chair.
He answered every call from his relatives with the same sentence.

👉 But when Ethan returned home with the deed in his hand, his mother learned the truth she had never expected.
