Chapter 2

PART 2:
Ethan dropped his lunch bag and ran to her.
She broke the second he touched her.
“I told them something was wrong,” she cried.
Ethan wrapped one arm around her waist and held her steady.
Then he turned toward his family.
His face went cold in a way none of them had ever seen.
“Pack your bags,” he said. “All of you.”
His mother blinked.
“What?”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“You heard me.”
The room fell silent.
Emily clung to his shirt as another wave of pain rolled through her body.
Ethan pulled out his phone and called 911.
Nobody laughed after that.
Six months earlier, Ethan had thought moving his family in was the right thing to do.
His father had died the year before, leaving his mother drowning in bills and bitterness.
His younger sister had been going through a divorce.
His cousin had lost his apartment.
Everyone needed help.
And Ethan was the kind of man who tried to carry people before asking whether they were willing to stand.
Emily had been the one who said yes.
Not because she wanted a full house.
She didn’t.
She had already been pregnant, tired, and nervous about becoming a mother for the first time.
But she loved Ethan.
And she knew he felt responsible for everyone.
“They can stay until they get back on their feet,” she told him.
Ethan kissed her forehead that night.
“Just a few months,” he promised. “And I’ll make sure they help.”
At first, they pretended to.
His mother brought soup once.
His sister folded baby clothes once.
His cousin carried in a crib box and acted like he had built the entire nursery by himself.
Then slowly, everything changed.
Dishes appeared and stayed.
Laundry piled up.
Food disappeared.
Bills went unpaid.
Emily would wake up and find five adults sitting around the kitchen table while every plate in the house sat dirty in the sink.
When she asked for help, Ethan’s mother sighed.
“When I was pregnant, I worked until the day I delivered.”
His sister said, “You’re lucky Ethan lets you stay home.”
That one hurt.
Emily had not “stayed home” because she was lazy.
She had left her job at seven months because her doctor warned her about high blood pressure and stress.
Ethan knew.
He had been at the appointment.

He had held her hand when the doctor said, “You need rest. Real rest.”
👉 But while Ethan worked long hours, Emily kept hiding the truth until his family mistook her silence for permission.
