Chapter 15 - Breakfast Again

Lucy was older now.
Still small.
Still carrying memories she could not explain with adult words.
But she stopped at the breakfast-room doorway without crying.
The room looked different.
The heavy furniture had been moved.
Morning light spread across the polished floor.
There was no dog bowl near the table.
No Bianca.
No Marcus.
Emma was there.
She had eventually returned to work part-time while attending college locally, though her role had changed. She was no longer expected to carry an entire household’s secrets alone.
There were safeguards now.
Multiple caregivers.
Independent access to Vittorio.
Clear reporting procedures.
Security logs reviewed by an outside firm.
No employee could disable residential cameras alone.
No partner of Vittorio’s would ever again receive household authority simply because he trusted them personally.
Rachel visited once after the case ended.
Lucy did not remember her clearly.
Rachel remembered Lucy.
That was enough.
Vittorio knelt several feet from his daughter and let her choose what happened next.
Lucy walked into the breakfast room.
She touched the edge of the table.
Then she climbed carefully onto the chair beside him with help.
Breakfast was simple.
Fruit.
Toast.
Eggs.
Nothing symbolic had been planned.
That made the moment more important.
No cameras waited to capture it.
No reporters knew it happened.
There was no dramatic announcement.
Just a father and his daughter eating breakfast in a room that had once contained the worst moment of their lives.
Vittorio noticed Lucy staring briefly at the corner where the dog bowl had landed.
Her expression tightened.
Then she reached for a strawberry.
The memory had not vanished.
Healing was not erasure.
It was the ability to remain in the room anyway.
Vittorio understood something he wished he had understood much earlier.
Protecting Lucy would never be a single heroic act.
It would be thousands of ordinary decisions made correctly when no one was watching.
The criminal case was nearly closed.
The civil cases were settling.
May you like
Bianca had one final court appearance remaining.
And at that appearance, Vittorio would learn whether she was capable of taking responsibility without blaming anyone else.
