Chapter 4 - The Woman He Almost Married
Vittorio had met Bianca eleven months after Lucy’s mother died.
He had not been looking for another relationship.
He had been functioning more than living.
There were board meetings, flights, attorneys, property decisions and sleepless nights with an infant who sometimes woke crying for reasons he could not understand.
Bianca had seemed patient.
She never tried to replace Lucy’s mother.
At least not in front of Vittorio.
She offered help without appearing desperate to be needed.
That was what had attracted him.
Now Vittorio reviewed the past year with new eyes.
Bianca had slowly taken control of household scheduling.
She had recommended Marcus.
She had pushed away two nannies.
She had convinced Vittorio that Emma was immature and probably temporary.
Most importantly, she had spent months encouraging Vittorio to resume the constant travel schedule he had maintained before becoming a father.
Each decision had seemed reasonable alone.
Together, they formed a pattern.
Isolation.
Bianca had never needed Vittorio to stop loving Lucy.
She only needed him absent often enough that she could control what he believed about her.
The engagement had been scheduled to become public at a charity dinner the following month.
Bianca had already chosen the venue.
Invitations had been drafted.
Nothing had been mailed.
Now there would be no engagement announcement.
Vittorio removed Bianca from every household authorization.
He froze access to shared credit cards.
He canceled her privileges on company aircraft and vehicles.
Then his attorney uncovered something unexpected.
Three weeks before the dog-food incident, Bianca had contacted a family-law firm under a different name.
She had asked general questions about step-parent rights.
She had also asked what evidence courts considered when deciding whether a biological parent was creating an unstable home environment.
That alone proved nothing criminal.
But another document made Vittorio’s stomach tighten.
Bianca had been keeping a private file about him.
Travel dates.
Missed pediatric appointments.
Late-night business dinners.
Photographs of Lucy crying.
Notes describing Emma as unreliable.
