Chapter 6 - What Emma Risked

Emma had not planned to become the person who exposed Bianca Moretti.

She was twenty years old.

She worked long hours.

She needed the job.

Her mother had recently lost steady work, and part of Emma’s paycheck helped cover expenses back home.

Bianca knew that.

That was why the threats worked.

Whenever Emma protested how Lucy was treated, Bianca reminded her how easily wealthy families could ruin a young employee’s reputation.

Marcus made the threat more believable.

After the first time Emma tried to report something to Vittorio, her staff access card suddenly stopped working.

The following morning, Marcus produced a report claiming Emma had entered a restricted office.

She had not.

Emma understood the warning.

They could manufacture records.

So she stopped confronting them.

Instead, she started preserving evidence.

At first she recorded short clips.

Then photographs.

Then copies of schedules.

She emailed backups to an account Bianca did not know existed.

When Marcus began searching employee phones during security checks, Emma bought an inexpensive second phone and hid it outside the mansion.

The phone she handed Vittorio that morning was not the archive.

It was only the device she used most recently.

That decision saved the case.

By late afternoon, Bianca demanded through an attorney that her belongings be returned.

Marcus separately claimed private business material had been improperly seized.

Vittorio’s lawyer advised him not to touch anything that might become evidence.

Police were contacted.

So was child protective services.

Vittorio did not use his wealth to bury what happened inside the mansion.

He did the opposite.

He gave investigators everything.

Including the footage showing him punching Marcus and slapping Bianca.

That choice mattered.

He refused to demand accountability from others while hiding his own actions.

Investigators documented the entire confrontation.

The legal consequences would be decided later.

Vittorio’s only immediate concern was Lucy.

But when Emma retrieved her hidden backup phone, she discovered something terrifying.

The cloud archive showed repeated login attempts from the previous night.

Someone knew the backup account existed.

And only one person besides Emma had ever seen her create it.

A former Romano employee who had disappeared without saying goodbye.
