Chapter 10 - The Custody Threat
Evelyn changed tactics.
She stopped pretending she had done nothing.
Instead, she tried to frighten me.
Her attorney sent a letter questioning whether I was acting in Maddie’s financial interests and warning against “alienating” her from the Bennett family.
I read it twice.
Then laughed.
Dana didn't.
“This isn't about winning custody,” she said. “It's pressure.”
Evelyn wanted me scared enough to negotiate.
She underestimated how angry I'd become.
Grant had moved out of our house voluntarily.
I allowed supervised contact with Maddie while we worked through lawyers and therapists.
He hated it.
I didn't care.
“You denied her,” I told him.
“I know.”
“In front of everyone.”

“She called you Dad.”
His eyes dropped.
“I hear it every night.”
“Good.”
Cruel?
Maybe.
But consequences weren't cruelty.
Meanwhile, Dana discovered Evelyn had been telling extended relatives that I was trying to steal Bennett assets using a child who “wasn't really Grant’s.”
That lie collapsed when the DNA findings became relevant to the trust dispute.
Maddie was Bennett blood.
Just not in the way Evelyn had expected anyone to discover.
Then came the strangest development.
Samuel’s daughter contacted Dana.
Her name was Leah.
I hadn't known Samuel had a child.
Neither had Grant.

I swallowed.

Leah had never opened it.
With her permission, her attorney reviewed it first.
