Chapter 4 - Evelyn's Bargain

Evelyn didn't deny knowing Dr. Vale.
She denied everything else.
“He was an old family acquaintance.”
We were standing in her living room two hours later.
Grant had insisted on coming.
I had insisted Claire come too.
“How old?” I asked.
“Twenty years.”
“And you recommended his clinic.”
“Yes.”
“And your phone number appeared on a change to my donor record.”
“I didn't change anything.”
“Then explain it.”
Evelyn looked at Grant.
Not me.
That was when I understood where to push.
“You humiliated your granddaughter because she wasn't Bennett blood.”
“She isn't my granddaughter.”
Grant flinched.
I held Maddie tighter.
“Interesting. Because the clinic says she is genetically related to the Bennett family.”
Evelyn’s composure cracked.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“So either you knew,” I continued, “or somebody gave Dr. Vale access to Bennett DNA without telling us.”
Grant turned sharply toward his mother.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
“Mom.”
“I was trying to protect this family!”
The words exploded out of her.
Silence.
Claire slowly lowered her phone onto the table, recording openly now.
Evelyn saw it and immediately stopped talking.
But she'd already given me something.
A motive.
For years, Evelyn had obsessed over the Bennett name.
Grant was her only son.
When we learned he was infertile, she had cried harder than either of us.
At the time, I thought she was grieving for him.
Now I understood.
She had been grieving for the bloodline.
Grant looked sick.
“Did you interfere with Rachel’s treatment?”
“No.”
“Did you speak to Vale?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with anger.
“He told me there were options.”
“What options?”
She refused to answer.
Then my phone rang.
Melissa.
I answered on speaker.
“We located a financial record associated with Dr. Vale’s archived correspondence.”
My pulse jumped.
“What financial record?”
“A private payment made three days before your procedure.”
“By whom?”
Melissa hesitated.
“The payment came from a Bennett family trust.”
Grant slowly turned toward his mother.
May you like
Evelyn didn't look surprised.
👉 Evelyn had secretly paid Dr. Vale before my procedure—but the trust records revealed someone else had authorized the money.
