Chapter 7 - The Man in the Photograph
I started looking at the Bennett family differently.
Not like relatives.
Like possibilities.
Grant’s father had one brother, Charles.
Charles had two adult sons.
There were cousins scattered across three states.
Any one of them could explain a family DNA match.
But why would Evelyn secretly choose one?
Dana warned me against guessing.
“Evidence first.”
She was right.
Then Claire remembered something.
“The photograph.”
“What photograph?”
“The one Evelyn pulled Maddie away from.”
We went back through pictures from the family gathering.
Behind the coffee table had been a collection of framed Bennett family photographs.
One showed Grant.
Another showed William.
But at the far end was an older photograph I'd barely noticed.
William stood beside a younger man.
They looked remarkably alike.
I sent it to Grant.
His response came immediately.
Where did you get that?
I called him.
“Who is he?”
Long silence.
“My uncle.”
“Charles?”
“No.”
I sat up.
“You told me your father had one brother.”
“My father had one acknowledged brother.”
There it was.
Another Bennett secret.
The man was Samuel Bennett.
William’s younger half brother.
According to Grant, Samuel had disappeared from family life decades ago after a vicious dispute with Evelyn.
“What dispute?”
“I was a kid.”
“That's not an answer.”
“My mother said Samuel tried to steal from Dad.”
“Do you believe her?”
Grant didn't respond.
Dana located public records.
Samuel hadn't disappeared.
He had moved to Oregon, worked as a biomedical engineer, married, divorced, and died eleven years ago.
Then we found something stranger.
For several years before his death, Samuel had participated in a university medical research program.
One involving hereditary cardiovascular conditions.
Stored blood and tissue samples.
My skin prickled.
Nine years before my fertility procedure.
Exactly the age of the specimen code.
But possibility wasn't proof.
Then Dana received the original storage facility’s response to her records request.
They had found the missing chain-of-custody document.
The specimen had a name attached.
Samuel Bennett.
I stared at it until the letters blurred.
Maddie might have been conceived using genetic material from Grant’s dead uncle.
