Chapter 2 - The File That Shouldn't Exist

Nobody answered me.
Grant stared at my phone.
Evelyn stared at Maddie.
That frightened me more than anything either of them could have said.
“What do you know?” I asked.
Evelyn recovered first.
“This is ridiculous. Those clinics make mistakes.”
“You didn't even see the report.”
Her mouth closed.
Grant immediately stepped between us.
“Rachel, not here.”
I almost laughed.
He had just denied our daughter in front of his entire family, but suddenly privacy mattered.
“Then tell me why your mother looks like she already knows what it says.”
“Stop.”
“No.”
I picked up Maddie and headed for the door.
Grant caught my arm.
I looked down at his hand.
“Take it off me.”
He released me.
That night, Maddie slept beside me in my sister Claire’s guest room.
I didn't sleep at all.
The clinic notification contained preliminary findings from a quality-control review. A genetic marker associated with Grant’s paternal family had triggered an internal discrepancy.
It wasn't enough to identify Maddie’s biological father.
But it was enough to raise a terrifying question.
The donor profile in my original treatment paperwork was supposed to have no biological relationship to Grant.
At 8:17 the next morning, I called the clinic.
A woman transferred me twice before a nervous administrator came onto the line.
“Mrs. Bennett, we need you to come in.”
“Why?”
A pause.
“There are inconsistencies in your archived treatment records.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What kind of inconsistencies?”
Another pause.
Then she said something that made me sit down.
“The authorization form stored in our system isn't identical to the copy you were originally given.”
I pulled my old fertility folder from my suitcase.
There it was.
Grant’s signature.
My signature.
The donor number we had chosen together.
But when I photographed the page and sent it to the administrator, she went silent.
“Mrs. Bennett…”
“What?”
“That donor number isn't the donor number recorded for your procedure.”
My stomach dropped.
Someone had changed my file.
May you like
And whoever did it had done so before Maddie was conceived.
👉 The clinic had just confirmed my paperwork was altered—but the person authorized to make that change was the last person I expected.
