Chapter 9 - The Deleted Message

Grant gave Dana permission to examine an old cloud backup.

He wanted to prove the signature wasn't his.

Instead, we found the message.

Evelyn had sent it at 10:06 p.m.

Nathan has solved the donor problem. I need your approval tonight. Rachel cannot know because she'll panic and ruin everything.

Grant had replied.

Do whatever you need to do. Just make sure the baby can never be challenged as mine.

I couldn't speak.

Grant covered his face.

“I didn't know she meant Samuel.”

“You knew she was doing something behind my back.”

“I thought she was fixing paperwork.”

“You told her to do whatever she needed.”

“I was terrified!”

“So was I!”

My voice cracked.

“I was injecting hormones into my body. I was going through procedures. I trusted my husband to protect me.”

Grant cried then.

It didn't move me.

Not yet.

He admitted Evelyn had convinced him an anonymous donor could someday threaten the Bennett inheritance.

She promised Vale could “structure things safely.”

Grant deliberately chose not to ask what that meant.

That was his betrayal.

Maybe he hadn't selected Samuel.

Maybe he hadn't forged the witness signature.

But he had opened the door and looked away.

Dana preserved the message.

The clinic’s insurer became involved.

An independent investigation began.

Dr. Vale finally responded through an attorney.

He denied knowingly performing any unauthorized substitution.

Then he made a claim that stunned everyone.

He said Evelyn had presented him with a consent amendment bearing both my signature and Grant’s.

Mine was fake.

A forensic document examiner later supported that conclusion.

Someone had forged my consent.

But Vale wasn't cleared.

The records showed serious procedural failures, and the investigation continued into whether he ignored obvious irregularities.

Then Grant received a voicemail.

He played it for Dana and me.

Evelyn’s voice.

“Come home. We can still fix this if Rachel stops digging.”

I stared at him.

“What does ‘fix this’ mean?”

Grant shook his head.

“I don't know.”

For once, I believed him.

Dana told him to return the call only with counsel’s guidance.

Evelyn answered immediately.

Grant asked one question.

“Did you forge Rachel’s signature?”

A pause.

Then Evelyn said:

May you like

“You would have lost everything without me.”

👉 Evelyn had finally tied the forgery to the inheritance—but she still believed the trust gave her power over Maddie, and she was about to use it.
