Chapter 11 - The Missing Witness
Maria Santos had not left the country.
Her airline ticket had been purchased, but never used.
Detective Ortiz traced her phone to a motel outside Bakersfield.
Paige and Evelyn drove there with an investigator.
Maria opened the door only after Paige said Arthur’s name.
She looked frightened.
“I cannot help you.”
“You witnessed his will,” Paige said.
Maria’s eyes filled with tears.
“I promised him I would.”
“Then why did you disappear?”
“Mr. Foster came to my apartment.”
Calvin had shown Maria photographs of her undocumented sister and threatened to report her.
He gave her cash and a plane ticket.
Maria took both to make him believe she would leave.
Then she hid.
“Did my father understand what he signed?” Paige asked.
Maria nodded.
“Completely.”
She described the signing.
Arthur read every page aloud.
He explained why he was changing the executor.
He asked both witnesses whether they believed he acted freely.
The first witness was his housekeeper, who signed normally.
Maria signed second.
Then Arthur sealed the will in the garden tube.
“Why the garden?” Paige asked.
Maria smiled sadly.
“He said Mr. Foster would search every place connected to money. He would never search the place connected to love.”
Maria agreed to testify.
Calvin’s attorney attempted to discredit her.
But the notary log, Arthur’s video and the first witness supported every detail.
The court admitted the will.
Paige inherited the mansion, the garden and controlling interest in Arthur’s development company.
Kyle received a protected trust and a second chance.
Calvin received nothing.
Tabitha received nothing.
When the judge announced the ruling, Calvin stared at Paige.
“This is not over.”
Paige looked back calmly.
“For you, it is.”
Outside the courtroom, prosecutors arrested Calvin again on additional charges related to witness intimidation and financial fraud.
Tabitha had already begun negotiating for a reduced sentence.
Her offer required her to testify against him.
The marriage that began with betrayal ended with both of them trying to save themselves.
But before Tabitha testified, she demanded to speak with Paige.
