Chapter 9 - The Letter to Kyle
Arthur had written two letters.
One to Paige.
One to Kyle.
Detective Ortiz allowed them to read copies after photographing the originals.
Kyle opened his with trembling hands.
Son,
If Calvin is using your mistakes against you, tell the truth before the lie becomes your life.
Kyle began to cry.
Arthur knew about the gambling debt.
Calvin had paid it secretly and then used the debt to control Kyle.
He forced Kyle to sign the sale agreement by threatening to expose him for taking money from a family business account.
Kyle had intended to replace the money.
But Arthur had already discovered it.
The letter continued:
I am disappointed that you hid this from me. I am not finished loving you.
Kyle pressed the paper against his mouth.
Paige put a hand on his shoulder.
Arthur had not removed Kyle from the estate to punish him.
He had created an independent trust so Calvin could not exploit him.
Kyle turned to Paige.
“I thought Dad hated me.”
“He was trying to save you.”
“I left him on that floor.”
“You were manipulated.”
“I still lied.”
“Yes,” Paige said gently. “And now you tell the truth.”
Kyle gave Detective Ortiz a full statement.
He admitted entering the house before the official timeline.
He admitted allowing Calvin to create a false version of events.
He surrendered his phone, bank records and every message Calvin had sent.
In exchange for cooperation, prosecutors agreed to consider the coercion Kyle faced.
Paige’s letter was shorter.
Her father wrote that the rose garden belonged to her, not because she loved flowers, but because she understood that living things required patience rather than control.
He warned her that Calvin confused possession with love.
Then came the final line.
Do not save the house if saving it requires losing yourself.
Paige looked around the library.
For the first time, she realized the estate did not have to remain exactly as Arthur left it.
She could protect the memory without living inside the pain.
But first, she had to stop Calvin from using the older will to challenge the new one.
