Chapter 14 - The Price of the Roses

Calvin was convicted of fraud, elder abuse, conspiracy, witness intimidation and involuntary manslaughter.

He received twenty-two years in prison.

Tabitha pleaded guilty to elder abuse, evidence tampering and conspiracy.

Her cooperation reduced her sentence, but not enough to protect her from prison.

At sentencing, the judge allowed Paige to speak.

She stood before the court in a pale floral dress.

Not the one she wore on the day Tabitha kicked her.

A new one.

Clean.

Unstained.

“You both believed my father’s house was the prize,” Paige said.

Calvin watched her with cold resentment.

Tabitha stared at the floor.

“You lied, threatened and hurt people because you believed ownership would make you powerful.”

Paige looked at Calvin.

“You took years from my marriage.”

Then at Tabitha.

“You took the final minutes of my father’s life.”

Her voice remained steady.

“But you did not take what you wanted most.”

Calvin’s jaw tightened.

“You did not make me small.”

The courtroom went silent.

“You did not turn Kyle into your permanent weapon. You did not erase my father’s truth. And you did not destroy the garden.”

Tabitha finally looked up.

Paige continued.

“The roses you wanted torn out are still growing.”

After sentencing, Paige returned to the estate.

Workers had repaired the cut camera cable.

The damaged branches had been pruned.

The oldest bush looked thin.

Kyle stood beside it.

“Will it survive?”

Paige touched a new green shoot.

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

“Because damage and death are not the same thing.”

Kyle nodded.

It was not only the rose she meant.

Together, they planted a new bush beside Arthur’s.

Kyle placed the brass key inside a small glass case in the foundation’s library.

The plaque beneath it contained no story about wealth.

Only one sentence:

The truth opens what fear tries to keep locked.

Paige stood before it for a long time.

Then a little girl staying at the foundation entered the room holding a white rose.

“Miss Paige?”

“Yes?”

“Can you show me where to plant this?”

Paige smiled.

May you like

“Of course.”

👉 Paige had recovered the house and cleared her father’s name—but healing required her to transform the place where she had been attacked.
