Chapter 15 - The Garden That Became a Home

Two years later, the Everett estate no longer felt silent.

Children laughed beneath the cypress trees.

Counselors met with families in the sunlit rooms Calvin once planned to sell.

The ballroom became a legal resource center.

The guesthouse became transitional housing.

Arthur’s private study remained preserved, but the door was never locked.

Paige wanted no room in the house to carry fear.

Kyle became the foundation’s operations manager after completing treatment and repaying the missing money.

He and Paige were not the siblings they had once been.

They were more honest.

Some days, that was better.

On the anniversary of Arthur’s death, they stood in the rose garden together.

Kyle looked toward the old stone path.

“Do you still think about that day?”

“Yes.”

“The kick?”

“The moment after.”

“When you found the envelope?”

Paige shook her head.

“The moment I realized Tabitha was afraid.”

Fear had made Paige kneel.

But it had also exposed the truth.

The bucket Tabitha kicked aside revealed the envelope.

The key revealed the study.

The study revealed the recording.

And the recording gave Arthur back his voice.

A group of women gathered beside the newest rose bed.

Each had completed the foundation’s program.

Each held a flower before leaving for a permanent home.

One woman approached Paige.

“You saved us.”

Paige looked around the garden.

“No. Someone helped me stand up. Then I made sure this place would help others do the same.”

She placed the woman’s rose into the soil.

Near sunset, Paige walked alone toward Arthur’s oldest bush.

It had fully recovered.

White blossoms covered the branches.

She cut one rose with the same red-handled pruning shears she had held the day Tabitha attacked her.

Then she carried it upstairs.

She placed it beside her father’s photograph in the open study.

“I kept it alive,” she whispered.

Sunlight moved across the desk.

Downstairs, someone called her name.

Paige turned toward the sound.

Toward the living house.

Toward the people waiting for her.

She left the study door open behind her.

For the first time, the estate did not feel like something she had inherited.

It felt like something she had chosen.

And the garden Tabitha tried to destroy had become the place where broken families learned they could grow again.

Would you have forgiven Kyle for helping Calvin—or would his fear and silence have been impossible for you to forget?
