Chapter 13 - Her Father’s Apology
Arthur admitted he had seen warning signs in Calvin long before Paige did.
He noticed the subtle insults.
The financial control.
The way Calvin made Paige apologize for things she had not done.
Arthur said he stayed quiet because he feared pushing her away.
“I called my silence patience,” he said. “It was cowardice.”
Paige began to cry.
Arthur continued.
“I should have trusted your strength instead of protecting my access to you.”
He explained that he had gathered evidence against Calvin.
The sale documents.
The affair.
The shell companies.
But he delayed telling Paige because she had already suffered so much.
That delay gave Calvin time to manipulate Kyle and recruit Tabitha.
Arthur looked directly at the camera.
“You may believe you failed because you married the wrong man. You did not fail. Trust is not a sin. Betrayal belongs to the person who betrays.”
Paige closed her eyes.
Those words released something inside her.
For months, she had blamed herself.
For not seeing Calvin clearly.
For losing her marriage.
For not reaching her father before he died.
Arthur’s message ended with a request.
Do not turn the estate into a monument to me.
Make it useful.
Make it alive.
Paige knew what she would do.
The mansion had sixteen bedrooms.
The detached guesthouse had four more.
The gardens could heal more than one family.
She established the Everett Haven Foundation, offering temporary housing, legal aid and counseling for women escaping financial and emotional abuse.
The private rose garden remained closed to the public.
But every spring, residents planted one new rose before leaving for permanent housing.
Kyle entered treatment for gambling addiction and began repaying what he had taken.
He worked for the foundation without salary during his first year.
Paige did not excuse his lies.
She allowed him to earn trust slowly.
“That’s all I’m asking,” he told her.
“No,” Paige said. “You’re asking for forgiveness.”
Kyle lowered his eyes.
“And I hope one day you earn it.”
Meanwhile, Calvin and Tabitha faced trial.
Tabitha testified.
Calvin called her a liar.
Then prosecutors played the study recording.
The jury heard Arthur asking for help while Calvin searched for the will.
