Chapter 4 - What Kyle Found That Night

Kyle did not leave with Calvin.

For the first time in weeks, he stood his ground.

“I’m staying.”

Calvin’s expression remained calm.

“That would be a mistake.”

Kyle looked at Paige.

“Open the study.”

Tabitha moved toward Calvin.

“We should go.”

He ignored her.

Paige held the key tightly.

“What did you find after Dad died?”

Kyle’s breathing grew shallow.

“I came here that night because he called me.”

Paige felt a chill.

Arthur had called Kyle less than an hour before his death.

The police report said Kyle arrived after the housekeeper found the body.

“That’s not what you told the police,” Paige said.

“I lied.”

Calvin spoke quietly.

“Think carefully.”

Kyle’s eyes flashed.

“You’ve done enough thinking for me.”

He turned back to Paige.

“Dad was alive when I arrived.”

The garden became silent.

Paige stared at him.

“How alive?”

“Barely.”

Kyle’s voice cracked.

“He was on the floor outside the study. He grabbed my sleeve and said one word.”

“What word?”

“Balcony.”

Tabitha’s face tightened.

Kyle continued.

“I ran toward the balcony doors. I heard someone downstairs. Then Calvin appeared.”

Paige looked at her ex-husband.

“You were here?”

Calvin smiled without warmth.

“Arthur called me too.”

Kyle shook his head.

“No. You were already inside.”

Calvin’s jaw flexed.

Kyle said Arthur had been clutching a torn piece of ivory fabric.

Tabitha looked down at her dress.

It was not the same dress she had worn that night.

But Paige remembered the funeral photographs.

Tabitha had appeared in ivory.

“I thought Dad had fallen,” Kyle said. “Calvin told me he found him that way.”

“And you believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

“What did Calvin threaten you with?”

Kyle looked broken.

“He showed me security footage of me entering the house before the official time of death. He said if I talked, the police would think I killed Dad.”

Paige felt anger rise through her grief.

“You let him control you.”

“I was scared.”

Calvin stepped forward.

“No one killed Arthur. His heart stopped.”

Kyle’s eyes hardened.

“Then why did Tabitha burn his medication log?”

Tabitha froze.

Paige turned toward her.

“What medication log?”

Kyle pointed at the upstairs balcony.

“Dad kept it in the study. I saw Tabitha carrying the pages into the fireplace.”

Calvin’s calm finally slipped.

“You saw nothing.”

Kyle reached into his jacket.

“I photographed one page before she burned it.”

He held up his phone.

A blurred image showed Arthur’s medication schedule.

One dosage had been altered by hand.

The initials beside it were T.F.
