Chapter 1 - The Hand Behind the Vent

“Ethan… what are you doing?”
Ryan Carter stopped in the kitchen doorway.
His seven-year-old son was kneeling beside a low metal wall vent, pushing tiny pieces of bread through the slats.
Ethan spun around.
His face went white.
“Dad…”
Ryan stepped closer.
“Who are you feeding?”
Ethan’s fingers began trembling.
“She said never to tell you.”
Ryan frowned.
“Who said that?”
Ethan pointed toward the wall.
“But the little girl is hungry.”
Ryan felt the air leave his lungs.
“What little girl?”
He moved toward the vent.
Claire rushed into the kitchen so fast she nearly slipped.
She threw herself between Ryan and the wall.
“Ryan, don’t open it!”
He stared at his wife.
Claire was shaking.
Not angry.
Terrified.
“Move.”
“No.”
A faint sound came from behind the wall.
A child crying.
Ryan went still.
Ethan backed away.
“Dad… she’s in there.”
Ryan dropped toward the vent.
Claire grabbed his shoulder.
“Please.”
Then a tiny hand appeared between the metal slats.
Dirty fingers.
A trembling wrist.
Ryan’s face drained of color.
A little girl whispered from inside:
“Daddy… help me.”
Silence swallowed the kitchen.
Ryan slowly turned toward Claire.
“Why did she call me Daddy?”
Claire stepped backward.
Her lips opened.
No words came.
Ryan looked at Ethan.
“How long have you known?”
“Three days.”
“Three days?”
“I heard crying when Mom was outside.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Ryan’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“What is behind that wall?”
Claire whispered:
“I can explain.”
“Then explain why there’s a child calling me Daddy inside my house.”
She couldn’t.
Ryan grabbed a screwdriver from the kitchen drawer.
Claire panicked.
“No!”
She reached for him.
Ryan pulled away.
“Touch me again and I’m calling 911 before I open it.”
That stopped her.
Ethan started crying.
“Dad, she said her name is Sophie.”
Ryan froze.
Sophie.
The name meant something.
A memory.
Five years earlier.
A hospital.
A phone call he had never been allowed to finish.
Claire saw his expression.
And that was when Ryan knew.

This wasn’t a stranger hidden behind his wall.
Claire knew exactly who the little girl was.
