Chapter 4 - The DNA Result That Didn’t Fit

The full test took longer.
Ryan hated every minute.
Sophie remained in protective medical care while authorities worked out emergency placement.
Ethan refused to leave her.
He brought crayons.
Books.
Bread.
Always bread.
Ryan noticed.
“Why bread?”
Ethan shrugged.
“She likes it.”
Sophie whispered:
“Because it doesn’t smell loud.”
Ryan didn’t understand.
Detective Hayes did.
“Children who have had food restricted sometimes attach safety to specific foods.”
Ryan felt sick.
Then the DNA report arrived.
Ryan read the result twice.
Sophie was not his biological daughter.
But she was his biological niece.
Ryan stared at the paper.
“My niece?”
Hayes nodded.
Ryan had one brother.
Adam.
Three years older.
Dead.
Adam Carter had died in a motorcycle crash six years earlier.
Before Sophie was born.
Ryan went completely still.
“No.”
Hayes asked:
“Did your brother have a relationship with Claire?”
Ryan’s head snapped up.
“Never.”
At least that was what he believed.
Then Sophie said:
“Mom said Daddy Ryan would take me home one day.”
Ryan looked at her.
“Did she ever say who your first daddy was?”
Sophie shook her head.
“Just a picture.”
“What picture?”
“A man who looks like you.”
Ryan’s throat tightened.
Adam.
Detectives searched Claire’s old cloud accounts with legal authorization.
They found photographs.
Claire and Adam.
Together.
At a restaurant.
At a cabin.
One showed them kissing.
Date:
Two months before Ryan proposed to Claire.
Ryan sat down.
He couldn’t feel his hands.
His brother.
His future wife.
An affair?
Then another date changed everything.
The last photograph was taken eight months before Sophie’s birth.
Adam died seven months before Sophie was born.
The timeline fit.
Claire had been pregnant with Adam’s child when she married Ryan.
Ryan remembered the wedding.
Claire had been sick in the mornings.
They thought it was stress.
Three weeks later she announced the pregnancy.
Ryan believed Sophie was his.
Then Claire disappeared.
Then came the story about the stillbirth.
Ryan covered his face.
Ethan whispered:
“Dad?”
“I’m okay.”
He wasn’t.
Hayes continued carefully.
“There are messages between Claire and Adam.”
Ryan didn’t want to hear them.
But Sophie deserved the truth.
The messages showed Adam knew Claire was pregnant.
He wanted to tell Ryan.
Claire refused.
ADAM:
He’s my brother.
CLAIRE:
And I’m marrying him.
ADAM:
Then we tell him before the wedding.
CLAIRE:
You’ll destroy everything.
The final message came the night before Adam’s crash.
ADAM:
Tomorrow I tell Ryan myself.
He died the next morning.
Ryan stared at that message until the screen blurred.
Then Hayes showed him the next thread.
Claire to Mark.
Two days after Adam died.
CLAIRE:
I can’t let Ryan know.
MARK:
Then we need another plan.
The plan became Sophie.
Hidden.
Moved.
Legally controlled.
Erased from Ryan’s life.
Ryan looked at the little girl asleep beside Ethan.
“She wasn’t hiding Sophie because Sophie was mine.”
Hayes shook her head.
“No.”
Ryan’s voice broke.
“She was hiding Sophie because Sophie was Adam’s.”
But that still didn’t explain the wall.
Or why Sophie suddenly appeared in Ryan’s house five years later.
Then investigators found Mark’s bank records.
A payment had been scheduled.
$400,000.
From an account in Adam Carter’s estate.
Beneficiary:
Any legally recognized biological child.
Sophie.
Ryan stared.

The money became available on Sophie’s fifth birthday.
Three weeks ago.
