Chapter 3 - Uncle Mark

Mark Delaney was Claire’s older brother.

Ryan had met him once.

At their wedding.

Mark lived in Indianapolis and supposedly cut contact with Claire years earlier.

That was another lie.

Police found recent calls between Claire and Mark within minutes.

Dozens.

Ryan sat beside Sophie in the hospital while doctors examined her.

She was dehydrated and underweight.

No life-threatening injury.

No broken bones.

But enough neglect that the pediatrician’s expression changed when Ryan explained where she had been found.

Ethan sat beside him.

He held Sophie’s hand.

“You can have all my snacks.”

Sophie almost smiled.

Ryan looked away.

He couldn’t handle kindness from his seven-year-old without falling apart.

A detective named Laura Hayes entered.

“Mr. Carter?”

Ryan stood.

She explained that Claire had been detained for questioning while investigators tried to establish how Sophie ended up inside the service space.

Ryan nodded.

Then asked:

“Is Sophie really mine?”

The detective was careful.

“We don’t know yet.”

Sophie heard.

Her expression collapsed.

Ryan immediately crouched.

“Hey.”

She looked at him.

“Whatever the test says, you did nothing wrong.”

“Mom said you’d be mad.”

“At you?”

Sophie nodded.

“Never.”

That answer came easily.

Later, Detective Hayes showed Ryan Claire’s phone records.

Mark had called her forty-three times in the last month.

Most calls were short.

Then one message appeared:

You need to keep Sophie out of sight until I get there.

Another:

Ryan cannot see her before we fix the papers.

Ryan stared.

“What papers?”

Hayes said:

“We’re working on that.”

Then she showed him something else.

A photograph Claire had sent Mark.

Sophie asleep.

Timestamped two weeks earlier.

Not behind the wall.

In a bedroom.

Ryan recognized the bedspread.

Claire’s late mother’s house.

That meant Sophie had not been living inside the wall for years.

She had been moved there recently.

“Where has she been for five years?”

Hayes hesitated.

“We found an address associated with Mark.”

Ryan’s chest tightened.

“Was she living with him?”

“Possibly.”

The detective paused.

“There’s another problem.”

“What?”

“Mark isn’t Sophie’s legal guardian.”

Ryan stared.

“Then who is?”

Hayes handed him a photocopy.

Temporary guardianship order.

Guardian:

CLAIRE CARTER.

Ryan felt dizzy.

Claire had legal papers acknowledging Sophie existed.

While telling her husband the child was dead.

Then he saw the date.

The guardianship order had been entered six weeks after Sophie’s birth.

Ryan whispered:

“She planned this from the beginning.”

Hayes didn’t answer.

Then she pointed to another name on the document.

Witness:

MARK DELANEY.

Sophie had been legally alive.

Claire knew.

Mark knew.

A court knew.

Ryan was the only person deliberately kept outside the truth.

Then the hospital called.

Sophie’s bloodwork was ready.

And with Ryan’s consent, a preliminary paternity comparison had been requested.

The doctor entered slowly.

“Mr. Carter…”

Ryan stood.

The doctor looked at Sophie.

Then back at him.

“There’s a strong biological relationship.”

Ryan’s heart stopped.

“But we need the full test to define it.”

“Define it?”

The doctor nodded.

“Because the pattern is not presenting exactly as a standard father-daughter match.”

Ryan stared at Sophie.

May you like

Then at the doctor.

“What does that mean?”
