Chapter 2 - The Baby Ryan Thought Was Dead

Ryan didn’t open the wall immediately.
He called 911.
Claire begged him not to.
That made him call faster.
Then he pulled Ethan behind him and stayed beside the vent.
“Sophie?”
A weak voice answered.
“Yes?”
“My name is Ryan.”
Silence.
Then:
“I know.”
His stomach twisted.
“How?”
“Mommy showed me your picture.”
Ryan looked at Claire.
She started crying.
“Ryan, please.”
He ignored her.
Five years earlier, Claire had been six months pregnant.
Not with Ethan.
With their first child together.
A girl.
They had already chosen the name Sophie.
Then Claire suddenly disappeared for three days.
When she returned, she told Ryan she had suffered a medical emergency while visiting her sister out of state.
She said the baby didn’t survive.
Ryan had collapsed.
There was no funeral.
Claire said the hospital handled everything because the pregnancy ended too early.
Ryan had asked for records.
She said she couldn’t bear to look at them.
He believed her.
Because she was his wife.
Because she cried in his arms.
Because grief makes you stupid around people you trust.
Now a five-year-old girl was behind his kitchen wall saying her name was Sophie.
Ryan stared at Claire.
“You told me she died.”
Claire sobbed.
“I thought it was better.”
“Better?”
Ethan flinched.
Ryan lowered his voice.
“Better for who?”
Claire covered her face.
“Sophie wasn’t supposed to come here.”
Ryan’s blood went cold.
“Where was she supposed to be?”
Before Claire could answer, the front door opened.
Paramedics and police entered.
Ryan led them to the vent.
A contractor from emergency services removed a section carefully.
Behind it was a narrow service space running beside the pantry.
Blankets.
Water bottles.
An old pillow.
And Sophie.
Small.
Pale.
Terrified.
Alive.
Ryan forgot how to breathe.
She looked at him.
Then at Claire.
Claire whispered:
“Oh, God.”
Sophie reached toward Ryan.
“Daddy?”
He lifted her carefully.
She clung to his neck.
Ryan started crying before he could stop himself.
He had held Ethan thousands of times.
He knew the instinct.
Protect.
Support the head.
Keep the child close.
His body knew Sophie before his mind could understand anything.
A paramedic asked:
“How long has she been here?”
Sophie buried her face against Ryan.
Then whispered:
“Mom said I had to hide until the man came back.”
Ryan looked over Sophie’s head.
“What man?”
Claire’s entire body stiffened.
A police officer noticed.
“So there’s another adult involved?”
Claire shook her head too quickly.
“No.”
Ryan stared at her.
“You just lied to me about my daughter being dead for five years.”
His voice broke.
“Don’t lie again.”
Then Sophie whispered something else.
“He knows Daddy doesn’t know.”
Ryan looked down.
“Who knows?”
Sophie trembled.
“Uncle Mark.”
Ryan didn’t know anyone named Mark.
May you like
Claire did.
Her face told him before her mouth ever could.
