Chapter 6 - Claire’s Confession

Claire sat across from Ryan in an interview room.
No makeup.
No controlled expression.
Just exhaustion.
Ryan did not sit close.
“Why?”
Claire looked down.
“Because Adam died.”
Ryan waited.
She continued.
“I was pregnant. You thought the baby was yours. Adam was going to tell you.”
“You mean Sophie.”
Claire flinched.
“Yes.”
“Use her name.”
“Sophie.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
Claire cried quietly.
“After Adam died, everything felt impossible.”
“So you told me my baby died.”
“I panicked.”
“For five years?”
She closed her eyes.
Ryan leaned forward.
“You watched me grieve.”
“I know.”
“I bought a tiny memorial bracelet.”
Claire started sobbing.
“You helped me choose the engraving.”
“I know.”
“You watched me blame myself because I was working when you supposedly lost her.”
“I know.”
Ryan’s voice cracked.
“And all that time Sophie was alive?”
“Yes.”
He looked away.
Claire whispered:
“I thought if you knew she was Adam’s, I’d lose you.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“So instead you lied until there was nothing left worth saving.”
Claire nodded.
Then Ryan asked:
“Why Mark?”
“He helped after the birth.”
“You gave Sophie to him?”
“At first only temporarily.”
“How long?”
Claire hesitated.
Ryan slammed his palm onto the table.
“How long?”
“Almost four years.”
Ryan stared.
“You visited?”
“Yes.”
“Did she know you were her mother?”
“Yes.”
“Did she know about me?”
Claire swallowed.
“I showed her pictures.”
“Why?”
“I told her you were family.”
“Daddy.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“I shouldn’t have.”
“Why did she call me that?”
Claire finally answered.
“When she asked why other kids had dads, I didn’t know what to say.”
“So you made me her imaginary father?”
“I told her you would protect her.”
Ryan felt sick.
Claire had stolen his relationship with Sophie while simultaneously using his image to comfort her.
Then came the harder question.
“Did Mark hurt her?”
Claire shook her head quickly.
“No.”
“Starve her?”
“No.”
“Then why was she underweight?”
Claire broke.
“After I brought her here, she wouldn’t stop asking for him.”
“Mark?”
Claire nodded.
“She cried constantly. She refused meals.”
Ryan stared.
“You put her behind a wall.”
“For two days.”
“That is not a defense.”
“I know.”
“No. You keep saying that.”
Claire looked up.
Ryan continued:
“You knew every time you closed that panel.”
Tears rolled down her face.
“Why?”
“Because Mark threatened to come get her.”
“So?”
“I needed time.”
“For the money?”
Claire hesitated.
Ryan saw the answer.
“Yes.”
There it was.
Not solely money.
But money mattered.
Claire said she believed the trust should belong to Sophie and that Mark would drain it.
She wanted legal control before he could act.
Ryan asked:
“Then why not tell me?”
Claire’s voice became small.
“Because the second you knew who Sophie was, I knew you’d choose her over me.”
Ryan stared at her.
“She was five.”
Claire cried harder.
“That’s not what I meant.”
“It’s exactly what you meant.”
Ryan stood.
The marriage was over.
Not because of Adam.
Not even because of the first lie.
Because five years later, Claire was still making children pay for adult choices.
As Ryan reached the door, Claire said:
“There’s something Mark hasn’t told you.”
He stopped.
“What?”
“Adam changed the trust two days before he died.”
Ryan turned.
Claire’s face was pale.
“He left more than money.”
“What?”
“A letter.”
Ryan’s throat tightened.
“For who?”
May you like
Claire answered:
“You.”
