Chapter 3 - The Night Emily Vanished

Daniel didn’t open the flash drive alone.
He called Detective Marcus Reed, the investigator assigned to Emily’s disappearance.
Reed arrived thirty minutes later.
Vanessa had already left after Daniel refused to argue with her.
But her final words stayed with him.
“You’re going to regret believing her.”
Detective Reed plugged the drive into his laptop.
The first video showed Emily in the kitchen six months earlier.
Same kitchen.
Same table.
Emily was crying.
Vanessa stood across from her.
The audio was clear.
“You need to stop coming here,” Emily said.
Vanessa laughed.
“It’s my family too.”
“No. It’s mine.”
Then Vanessa stepped closer.
“You always think you own everything.”
Emily lowered her voice.
“What do you want?”
Vanessa answered:
“Your life.”
Daniel looked at Reed.
“What the hell does that mean?”
Reed raised one hand.
“Keep watching.”
The video continued.
Emily held up documents.
“You opened accounts in my name.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You have no proof.”
“I have enough.”
Daniel’s stomach turned.
He had never heard about any accounts.
Emily continued.
“You used my Social Security number.”
Vanessa moved toward the camera.
Then the footage cut.
The next clip was timestamped 11:48 p.m.
Vanessa entered the house carrying Emily’s coat.
She walked directly into the garage.
Five minutes later, she came back without it.
Daniel leaned forward.
“She told police she left at eight.”
Reed nodded.
The next clip showed Vanessa carrying Emily’s handbag.
Then Emily’s phone.
Then a small stack of papers.
At 12:17 a.m., Vanessa wiped the kitchen counter.
At 12:28, she left.
Emily was never seen on camera again.
Daniel’s hands went numb.
“Where was Emily?”
Reed looked at him.
“That’s what we need to find out.”
Then the final file opened.
It was an audio recording.
Emily’s voice.
“If anything happens to me, check Vanessa’s storage unit.”
Vanessa’s storage unit.
Daniel knew exactly where it was.
She had rented it years earlier after their mother died.
Detective Reed immediately requested a warrant.
But before he left, he turned to Daniel.
“Did Vanessa ever explain why she moved in with you after Emily disappeared?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“She said Noah needed a woman around.”
Reed looked toward the toddler sleeping against Daniel’s shoulder.
“And did she ever ask you for money?”
Daniel’s blood went cold.
Because Vanessa hadn’t asked for money.
May you like
She had asked for something much bigger.
Three weeks earlier, she had suggested Daniel remove Emily’s name from the house deed.
