Chapter 5 - The Facility

The facility was called Brookhaven Recovery Center.

Daniel had never heard of it.

Detective Reed contacted administrators.

At first they refused to discuss any patient.

Then, after proper legal verification and Emily’s direct consent, the picture began to emerge.

Emily had been admitted six months earlier.

Not for addiction.

Not for psychiatric illness.

She had arrived disoriented and physically weak after being brought in by Vanessa.

Vanessa claimed Emily had become unstable.

She produced paperwork showing she was temporarily authorized to manage Emily’s medical affairs.

The document was forged.

But at the time, staff had believed it.

Vanessa told them Daniel was abusive.

Daniel nearly dropped the phone.

“What?”

Reed nodded grimly.

“She claimed Emily was afraid of you.”

That explained everything.

Why the facility never contacted him.

Why Emily had been isolated.

Why police searches never connected to her.

Vanessa had built a false story around both of them.

To Daniel:

Emily abandoned you.

To Emily:

Daniel is dangerous.

Emily remained at Brookhaven for eleven days.

Then she disappeared from the facility.

“Where did she go?” Daniel asked.

The administrator hesitated.

“She left with her sister.”

Daniel went cold.

“Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

The discharge records listed Vanessa.

After that, Emily vanished again.

But now Daniel understood the phone call.

Emily had escaped something.

Not six months ago.

Recently.

Later that afternoon, Emily called again.

This time from a secure phone arranged through Detective Reed.

Daniel nearly cried when he heard her.

“Where are you?”

“Safe.”

“Emily, please.”

“I’m staying with someone who helped me.”

“Who?”

She hesitated.

“Dr. Laura Hayes.”

Daniel knew the name.

One of Brookhaven’s former physicians.

Emily explained slowly.

After leaving Brookhaven, Vanessa moved her to a rural rental property.

Vanessa told her Daniel had filed for divorce.

That he wanted Noah away from her.

That police believed she was dangerous.

Emily had no phone.

No ID.

No access to money.

She had been weak, frightened, and medicated.

Months passed.

Then Dr. Hayes found Emily by accident during a home-health consultation.

She recognized her.

And she realized something was terribly wrong.

“Why didn’t you call immediately?” Daniel asked.

Emily started crying.

“Because I believed her.”

“Believed what?”

“That you hated me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then Emily said:

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“Vanessa didn’t do this just because she hated me.”

May you like

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“She was being paid.”
