Chapter 7 - The Business Partner

Daniel forwarded the message to Detective Reed.

Within hours, the investigation widened.

Caldwell’s attorneys denied everything.

They claimed he heard rumors.

They claimed the payments to Vanessa were legitimate consulting fees.

They claimed the shell company structure was standard business practice.

But Daniel knew Vanessa.

She had never consulted for a development company in her life.

Then he remembered a dinner two months before Emily vanished.

Caldwell had come to their house.

Emily challenged him over a proposed refinancing deal.

“You’re trying to dilute Daniel’s ownership,” she said.

Caldwell smiled.

“You’re not a lawyer.”

“No. I can read.”

Daniel had tried to calm them down.

He hated conflict.

That habit now disgusted him.

Emily had been protecting their family.

Daniel had been protecting everyone’s comfort.

Detectives recovered emails between Caldwell and Vanessa.

Most were carefully worded.

But one message stood out.

Caldwell:

We need her out of the way before closing.

Vanessa:

I’m handling my sister.

Caldwell:

Handle it legally.

Vanessa:

You didn’t hire me for legal.

Daniel read the exchange twice.

He felt nauseated.

Caldwell’s attorney insisted “out of the way” referred only to the business negotiations.

Perhaps.

But Vanessa’s response sounded different.

Then another email appeared.

Vanessa:

Once Daniel believes she left him, he’ll sign anything.

Caldwell:

Don’t involve me in domestic details.

That sentence became important.

Caldwell had clearly known Vanessa planned deception.

Whether he knew about confinement or medication remained unproven.

But he knew she intended to manipulate Daniel.

And he paid her.

Meanwhile Emily finally came home.

Not permanently.

Under a safety plan.

Daniel stood in the entryway with Noah in his arms when her car pulled up.

Emily stepped out slowly.

She looked thinner.

Paler.

But alive.

Noah stared.

Then his whole body started trembling.

“Mommy?”

Emily covered her mouth.

Daniel put Noah down.

The toddler ran.

Emily collapsed onto her knees and caught him.

She sobbed into his hair.

“My baby.”

Noah touched her face.

“You came back.”

Emily cried harder.

Daniel turned away.

Then Noah said something that made everyone freeze.

“Vanessa said you didn’t want me.”

Emily’s face changed.

She looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked at the floor.

Because Vanessa had not only imprisoned Emily.

She had spent six months teaching a baby that his mother abandoned him.

Emily held Noah tighter.

“I wanted you every single day.”

Then Noah whispered:

“She hurt me when I cried for you.”

Emily slowly raised her eyes.

May you like

“What did she do?”

Daniel had not yet told her everything.
