Chapter 9 - The Forged Consent

The document changed everything.

Until then, Caldwell could argue Vanessa acted independently.

Now there was a direct financial benefit.

Emily’s supposed consent allowed Caldwell to proceed with a refinancing structure that increased his control over the company.

Daniel had signed afterward.

He remembered the meeting.

Caldwell placed a stack of papers in front of him.

“Emily already approved this before she left.”

Daniel had believed him.

He hadn’t checked.

That mistake cost him nearly $600,000 in diluted equity.

But the money barely mattered now.

Emily’s forged signature did.

The notary, Jennifer Cole, initially denied wrongdoing.

Then investigators showed her timestamped facility records proving Emily couldn’t have appeared before her on the signature date.

Jennifer asked for an attorney.

Two days later, she began cooperating.

Caldwell had told her Emily signed earlier.

He asked Jennifer to notarize it after the fact.

Jennifer knew it was improper.

She did it anyway.

Then she revealed something worse.

Vanessa had brought the document.

Not Caldwell.

“But Thomas knew,” Jennifer said.

“How do you know?” Detective Reed asked.

“Because he was standing there.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

His best friend.

His business partner.

The man who hugged him at Emily’s “missing person” vigil.

The man who told newspapers Daniel was “a devoted husband living through every family’s nightmare.”

Caldwell had known Emily was being erased.

Maybe he didn’t know every detail.

But he knew enough.

His attorneys shifted strategy.

They blamed Vanessa.

Caldwell claimed she exceeded anything he authorized.

Vanessa’s attorney responded by blaming Caldwell.

Within a week, the alliance began collapsing.

That was when Vanessa called Daniel from an unrecognized number.

He answered only because police had instructed him to preserve contact attempts.

“Daniel.”

His jaw tightened.

“What?”

“You think Thomas is going to protect you?”

“Protect me from what?”

“He started this.”

Daniel recorded the call according to legal guidance.

Vanessa continued.

“He wanted Emily’s signature gone. He said she was ruining the deal.”

“You kidnapped your sister.”

“I protected her.”

Daniel nearly laughed.

“You locked her away.”

“She was unstable.”

“You drugged her.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa snapped:

“You don’t know what she was like!”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“I know what you’re like.”

Vanessa began crying.

Not remorsefully.

Angrily.

“He promised me a million dollars.”

Daniel froze.

“For what?”

“To make sure Emily stopped interfering.”

There it was.

May you like

Then Vanessa realized what she had said.

The line went dead.
