Chapter 4 - The Storage Unit

The warrant came the next morning.

Daniel stayed home with Noah while Detective Reed searched Vanessa’s storage unit.

At 10:37 a.m., Reed called.

“Daniel, you need to come down here.”

Ryan, Daniel’s older brother, watched Noah.

Daniel drove across town.

The storage unit smelled like cardboard and dust.

Boxes lined the walls.

Most were ordinary.

Christmas decorations.

Furniture.

Old family photographs.

Then Reed showed Daniel a locked metal cabinet.

Inside were copies of Emily’s identification.

Bank statements.

A passport photocopy.

And three credit cards bearing Emily’s name.

Daniel stared.

“These aren’t hers.”

“No.”

The cards had been opened using Emily’s identity.

The balances totaled nearly $74,000.

Reed pulled out another folder.

Inside were handwritten notes detailing Emily’s work schedule, bank passwords, and security questions.

Then Daniel saw something that made his knees weaken.

A photograph of Noah.

Taken through a window.

Before Emily disappeared.

On the back, Vanessa had written:

HE’LL FORGET HER.

Daniel sat down.

“What was she planning?”

Reed didn’t answer.

Then another detective called from the back.

They had found a suitcase.

Emily’s suitcase.

The same one Vanessa claimed Emily packed before leaving Daniel.

Inside were clothes folded neatly.

Emily’s jewelry.

Her wedding ring.

Daniel stared at it.

Vanessa had handed police a story six months earlier.

Emily packed a suitcase.

Emily left her ring.

Emily walked away.

But the suitcase had never left Vanessa’s possession.

Daniel’s grief turned to fury.

“She staged it.”

Reed nodded.

“It looks that way.”

Then they found medical records.

Not Emily’s original records.

Copies.

One page showed treatment at a private rehabilitation facility four hours away.

Patient name: Emily Miller.

Admission date: the morning after she vanished.

Daniel’s pulse exploded.

“She was hospitalized?”

Reed studied the page.

“Maybe.”

“Then why didn’t anyone find her?”

“Because this facility is private.”

The admission form listed an emergency contact.

Not Daniel.

Vanessa Miller.

Relationship:

Sister.

And beneath that—

LEGAL GUARDIAN.

Daniel stared at the words.

Vanessa had somehow convinced a medical facility that she had authority over Emily.

But Emily had never given her that authority.

Then Reed found the signature.

Emily Miller.

It looked real.

Almost.

Daniel had signed thousands of birthday cards beside his wife.

He knew her handwriting.

“That’s forged.”

May you like

Reed looked at him.

“I think you’re right.”
